oh, so this weekend i carefully analyzed fuel consumption in the jeep with different trailers...

no trailer - avg 18 mpg
5x8, tailgate removed, empty - 16.5
7x12, empty, tailgate still on - 13
7x12 with the admiral - 11
5x10 enclosed empty - 11
5x10 enclosed with 2 bikes - 9

The reason it quickly drops to 9 mpg there is because the jeep has to drop into 3rd at the slightest uphill or headwind. Next weekend I will conduct some low speed around town driving. I expect weight to play more of a part than aire resistance.
