A warmed speculum (speck-you-lumm) is passed into the vagina to separate the walls so the health care provider can see your cervix (the part of the uterus that is at the very top of your vagina and is the bottom of the uterus). Cervix actually means the neck of the uterus.

A wooden spatula (thinner than a tongue depressor) is wiped across the cervix, and the smear is transferred to a glass slide. Also a very long wand, much like a mascara wand is used to gently scrape the inside of the cervix. This doesn't hurt; some women say they feel a little twinge, but it only lasts a second. This wand is also smeared on the slide and sprayed with a solution to "fix" it to the slide. The slide is then sent to a laboratory to be examined by a medical person who specializes in "reading" pap smears.

I wanted to get the actualy spellin' for the tool.. it seems easy like in the process .. but if the speculum is cold.. ooooo that sux.. and if she's not gentle she can pinch you like the doc did to me once.. dayum bi tch

nooo that if done right isn't soo bad... it just makes me cramp like crazy.. I'm more sensitive apparently..
but the scrapin' of the tissue inside is what really hurts..

they are only supposed to do that for a biopsy, not a normal pap.
normal pap they just poke and prod with their fingers first, then put this spreading contraption in there, swirl around a plastic thingy, and then a swab. it's over pretty fast.


when they cut off tissue that is not part of a normal pap...well not one i have ever had. the pap is supposed to just scrape off cells so they can check them out and make sure there are no abnormalities.
