i would say they do it because its easier to mount and dismount but imo it weakens the cage ,but if you are talking about a cage with 2 totally separated sides that would have too much flex I remember Boyd ran his tigershark cage without the crossbar in the front and when he dropped the bike it cracked the stator cover so if it doesnt have that bar in the middle it would cause it to give in.

my cage is actually seperate on each side...myfabricater up here made it for me and myself, gil and john for life are running almost identical cages....ill see if i can find a couple pix
