Only true way to fix it is to tear your engine apart, split the case, and fix the shifter forks, and possibly the gears if they got f'd up in the process also. Cheap way is to have a friend do the work for you.

Had this problem, yes you have to drop the motor split the cases, and mine was the shift drum, 2 shift forks and 3 gears, plus washers spacers etc... And not to mention the bore in the case that the output shaft of the transmission rides in was cracked which I didnt notice the first time I tore into it so 1500.00 dollars and two operations later it was fixed.... So to make a long story short if you tear into it inspect everything not just the obvious...

Re: 2ND Gear help

When I traded my ZX-6E in, on a TL1000R back in 98... the salesman said he had to check it out, and took it out on Telegraph. WaaaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHaaaaAAAAAAHHH I heard it pop out of 2nd about 3 times in a quarter mile on him. He came back and said, "We can't take this bike in on trade." I sold it to my roommate for $3500. He rode it for a year with no second gear and then sold it...
