Lift bridge closes Monday

Time to break out the antacids, calculate drive times and map out alternative routes: the Stillwater lift bridge is closing.

The historic bridge that links downtown Stillwater with Wisconsin across the St. Croix River will close to vehicles at 5:30 a.m. today for much-needed repairs. Boats won't be affected.

The $5 million project, which will be handled by the Lunda Construction Co., will take three months. The bridge is scheduled to reopen Oct. 31.

The suggested detour is a 15-mile route through Hudson, Wis., and across the river on Interstate Hwy. 94. An estimated 16,000 motorists use the bridge every day.
