Re: Coolant

Hey Rob, I usually put the green stuff in at about a 50/50 mix. If your replacing the air filter, put in a K&N while your at it. Are you going to change gearing at all with the new sprockets? Would be the time if your already buying new. Anyhow, get it done soon.......riding time is near.

Re: Coolant

Hmmm, The only time I ever considered changing/messing with coolant in my bikes was when I was lookin at doin a trackday where regular coolant was unwelcome at the track.
I was gonna use waterwetter..never happened.
Out of a total 63k miles and 4 bikes I never once messed with the coolant.
I probly missed out on some hidden horsepower or some crap like that all those years! Dammit!

Re: Coolant

My manuel says to change after 2 years. But when it's leaking out on the ground i've drained it to JB weld the radiator and found a gallon under the house I rent. Brand ??, there was no label left on it but it was green and I diluted 50/50, hope it was antifreeze.

Re: Coolant

YES, you should change your coolant every 3 to 4 years. Just like oil, you don't have to and won't see any difference probably if you don't in any near future events. Coolant will pick up debris over the years and loose a bit of it cooling properties also. Don't forget it is also there to help lubricate seals such as water pump. Anyhow, I drained some nasty looking coolant out of 5 or 6 year old vehicles for whatever reason, so I don't take a chance on my bike for $10 every 4 years. My thoughts.

Not any more than water would

Because the blocks are made of IRON.. Iron rusts and adds debris (see quote 1) to the coolant. This is what will block cooling passages, and causes a degedation of SYSTEM performance over time. This of cours is in addition to whatever cuttingfluids /oils /ham sandwitches that were in the cooling passages when it was new. In an all aluminum sportbike engine your not dealing with rust. and your tap water is more corrosive than anything you put in there. Remeber water is a far better coolant than antifreeze/antiboil..thats why you run a 50/50 mix.
Back to rob. when the engine work was done to your bike it had a coolant change. Coolant doesnt need changing over x miles like oil, its all time based, and its on contaminants, not a breakdown of the coolant. Your coolant is fine, save your money, buy me a burger and we'll call it good.

Sorry dan didn't mean to picjk on ya, just stetting rob straight.

does it? from my understanding, it doesnt alter the boiling and freezing point of water, like antifreeze or engine ice. it just helps lubricate the water/system so i flows better.

Re: Coolant

Hey Rob, change your coolant like your original plan and your manual states. It's $10 and a good thing to due. You'll have a $1000 experts that know everything state their opinions just like I knew they would.

Just do a Google search and I found about 100K articles about how coolant looses it ability to cool & lubricate over time and it's probably the single most important overlooked maintence that needs to be done to your vehicle over time. You'll probably find just as many saying you never need to change it. You should know better than to ever ask questions on this forum, have fun and get it ready to ride that biatchhh.

distilled water only. tap is corrosive to ur cooling system
It reduces the surface tension of the coolant.

+1 on the distilled water

yes and no, dexcool and others like the honda are engineered to be less corrosive to aluminum heads/blocks/ ect, but the green glycol antifreze can corrode aluminnum over a couple years. but it will introuduce aluminum oxide to the coolant and begin plugging the passages in your radiator.. now if you mix the dexcool and conventional you will get a nice sludge indeed
