MX bike.. yah or nah?
MX bike.. yah or nah?
Ok I been thinking about spending money on a MX bike to do some trail riding and mounds etc..
I am quick to jump into things without thinking them through. Some points I have came across are:
1. How many times will I be able to ride it?
2. How many people can i ride with (riding alone sucks)?
3. MX or Quad (leaning towards mx)?
4. Buy a newer 4 stroke 250 or older 250?
Dunno just dont want to spend 3-4 grand and not use it or use it enough to warranty paying cash for it and then loosing money when i sell it.

Re: MX bike.. yah or nah?
I love my bike, things a blast to ride. Seems more fun to ride that out at the mounds then it is to hit the street with you ********
1. Get a yearly pass and you can ride whatever ORV trails you want from sunup to sundown. The mounds out at Mt. Morris are sweeet!
2. Me, rick, and matt have our own rides. We're working on a weekly ride at the mounds.
3. quads are for losers
4. I wouldn't say older, I would say "recent". You don't want some '80's POS out there. But you also don't want something brand new then wreck it right off the bat.
I wouldn't spend 3-4 grand on a bike right off the bat. My 125 only cost $1,400. I was looking at a KTM 250 the other day for only 2 grand. Some other excellent dirtbikes around 2 grand.
*EDIT*: Don't forget your riding gear. A complete set is gonna cost you about $600. At the very least, you'll need a helmet and boots (DON'T SKIP ON THE BOOTS!). That's about $300 right there.

Re: MX bike.. yah or nah?
I would say get a quad they are great for stunting the streets as well as hitting the trails.
Even if the guy that left early thinks quads are for losers, hes only there 1/2 the time.

Re: MX bike.. yah or nah?
I say nah. I've got an 83 rm500 I spent tons of money on and I've ridden it maybe 7-8 times in the last 3 years. can't ride them on the road, can't ride
them at night, easy to get maimed by one, unless you have a ton of private acerage to ride on its tough to find somewhere to ride one. You'll have a tough time riding any mxer (although some guys do it) at the mounds cause of all the deep mud and ruts and also the trails are pretty narrow and crowded. The rr grade trail and the oval track get closed often so forget about any straightaways out there.

We need to all pitch in and buy land, have a quad, stunt and dirtbike area............................oh, my bad....thanks to the 2 billion lawyers in the country we would get taken to court because someone scratched their pinky and loose everything we ever had.

Get a dirt bike. I bought a 99 KTM 300 EXC in Feb. for $1700. I have'nt ridden the mounds cause i hear it's really crowded out there and there's a lot of truck traffic, but I haven't been there yet, I would like to go check it out with Taz and co one of these days. As for riding areas, the best are up North, and you have to plan on spending a weekend up there if you really want to ride. Annie and I have been twice in the past 3 weeks. You can also come ride at my new house cause were building an mx track on it. The offer is still open to ride my bikes to see if you like it. I have a big 4 stroke and a 2 stroke so you can ride both and see the difference. Lucky was right about the boots, it's the most important equipment you can buy. I have Alpinestart Tech 4's that I got brand new for $150. They are wonderful and you don't need anything more for trail riding. If you going to get into Supercross or racing then I would buy the tech 8 or 10's but for anything else, the Tech 4's are all you need.
One more thing to consider when buying a used bike. You can totally rebuild a 2 stoke engine for about $400. If you buy a used recent model 4 stroke that has been raced, a rebuild will cost you at least double. The 2-strokes are simple machines, no valve train etc. Much less maintenance but you pay $1 extra per gallon of gas for the oil mix.
I rode a quad for a summer and didn't really like it. There are a lot of trails up north that you can't ride a quad on, but you can ride a bike anywhere you can ride a quad. However, it's a personal choice, I would ride both and see which one you like best before you went out and bought one.

I forgot to mention, if you do get a dirt bike one thing that is nice in Mich is that it is not hard to get plated. Both of my KTM's got plates with just taking the title in and having insurance, and one is a 2 stroke. Even if you have to get an inspection like my dad's CRF250X, all you need to add is a mirror(unless you have a little stick on mirror on your helmet), headlight, brake light and a horn. If you do get one, get one with a headlight and your pretty much all set. It's nice not to have to trailer it everywhere.

Tony on a dirt bike I see a big crash coming soon to a post near you.....
Also must the light conversion kits are fairly costly. So if your choice is to get that chit just find one already doing. But then again you are made of money so forget the above recommendations.
