Sport bikers face higher risks than other motorcyclists on the roads

07:39 AM CDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008

By DAN X. McGRAW and MICHAEL E. YOUNG / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – As rush hour dies down on the interstate, a two-wheeled crowd gathers outside the Grand Buffet and Bar, the parking lot pulsing with the whine of high-revving engines, fueled by an injection of adrenaline built on risk and speed.

JOHN F. RHODES/DMN
Patrick Stephens of Crowley is part of a movement to get stunt riders and would-be racers off the roads and onto parking lots and racetracks.

Most of the motorcyclists are young men, though two women join them, particularly conspicuous in a subculture seemingly fueled on pure testosterone.
They favor high-power, lightweight sport bikes that can accelerate from a dead stop to 60 mph in three seconds or less, hold a "wheelie" for miles at highway speed and – at 185 mph – outrun the fastest police cars.
It's a mix that means riders of these race-inspired machines die at rates far higher than other motorcyclists.
"These are not very forgiving vehicles," said Kim Hazelbaker of the Highway Loss Data Institute, which compiled accident statistics in 2007.
On this September night, Patrick Stephens, 26, of Crowley guns his engine and cruises around the MacArthur Boulevard lot before pulling the front of his bike up in a wheelie. On his return pass, the rear wheel is up, the front down – a "stoppie" to the stunt-riding crowd.
A week earlier, Robert "Brad" Wright of North Richland Hills and Derek Smith of Bedford joined this Bike Night crowd outside a Grapevine Hooters restaurant. When the group pulled out of the parking lot, Mr. Wright and Mr. Smith, both 18, stayed behind.
Soon afterward, several bikers said, the two sped past the others on State Highway 161, where the posted speed limit is 60.
A short while later, Mr. Smith lost control of his motorcycle while negotiating an exit ramp to State Highway 183. He hit the retaining wall and fell 34 feet to the ground below. Mr. Wright, traveling behind, hit Mr. Smith's bike and flipped over the wall.
Both died.
It was a tragic night, and an all-too-common one.
Riders of "supersport" bikes, built on racing platforms, are four times as likely to be killed than riders of "cruiser" bikes, such as Harley-Davidsons, according to a 2007 report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The fatality rate for less-specialized sport bikes is twice that of cruisers.
The usual cause: high speed or driver error.
Both could have been the factors in the deaths of Mr. Smith and Mr. Wright, Irving police spokesman David Tull said. Investigators haven't determined the speeds involved, but they say Mr. Wright may have been too close to Mr. Smith's motorcycle to react quickly enough when it hit the wall.

Rush of the road

As a group, sport bike riders are the youngest in motorcycling, a group keen on "thrill-seeking behavior," Mr. Hazelbacker said.
But Mr. Wright's brother, Cody Dollar, said he was a safe driver, not a stunter. He figures Mr. Wright was going about 70 mph at the time of the crash, but said the curve on the exit ramp comes up abruptly.
"I don't think people should stop riding because of what happened," said Mr. Dollar, 20. "They just need to be safe. Wear a helmet and don't do crazy stuff."
But "crazy" is one of the labels slapped on sport bike riders – especially by anyone startled by a motorcycle suddenly appearing in their rearview mirror, then screaming past in a blast of acceleration.
Mr. Hazelbaker said he doesn't mind riders getting their thrills – as long as they aren't on public highways.
But for some, that's the lure.
Jeremy Durrett, 25, of Grapevine bought a sport bike a year ago. After doing his first wheelie, he was hooked on "stunting."
And he doesn't like the limits of parking lots for trick riding. He prefers highway speeds, though he realizes other motorists don't always welcome him there. Some have tried to run him off the road.
His roommate, Lee Martin, 24, said accomplished riders can do everything on one wheel that they can on two – accelerating and braking, even exiting a highway.
"I can do a wheelie for 15 to 20 miles now," he said. "It's not challenging."
Perhaps. But to Daniel Byram of Richardson, the highways are dangerous enough with both wheels firmly on the ground.
"If you ride on the streets of Dallas, you basically have to have a sense of paranoia that everyone is out to get you," said Mr. Byram, a 47-year-old sport bike rider.
"There's an old fighter pilot term – situational awareness – that's really key to riding a bike. You need to hone a sixth sense, and you always have to have a place to go – an out, to protect yourself."
Sean Willis of Oak Cliff, who rides a $12,000 bike with a top speed of 180 mph, is even more blunt.
Stunts aren't "my thing," said Mr. Willis, 29. "I think it's pretty stupid, pretty irresponsible."

Light, fast and cheap

A sport bike's racing heritage is impossible to miss.
Covered with sleek fairing, the bikes feature a driving position that, as Mr. Hazelbaker puts it, "has the rider almost lay on the gas tank and footrests so high that you're in a jockey position with your feet right under your butt."
The real keys to the design, though, are weight and power. The fastest bikes pump 175 horsepower to the rear wheel, give or take a pony, but weigh less than 500 pounds. Contrast that with a big Harley cruiser, which can easily weigh 800 pounds with half of the power.
And the market is so competitive that even the biggest, fastest mass-produced sport bikes can be had for around $12,000.
"They're at a price point where any kid flipping burgers can go out and get one," Mr. Hazelbaker said.
Twelve grand buys a motorcycle that goes from 0 to 60 in about 2.75 seconds and rips through a quarter-mile in less than 10, topping out at an electronically regulated 185 mph.
For $8,000 or so, you can buy a bike capable of 150 mph powered by an engine that races to 17,500 rpm.
The sport bike's acceleration, Mr. Hazelbaker said, is almost unimaginable.
"If your son came to you and said, 'I want to buy Dale Jr.'s race car,' you'd say, 'No way,' " he said. "And these bikes are way faster than Dale Jr.'s race car."
Even a midsize sport bike, such as those in the very competitive 600cc segment, can top 150 mph and run a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds.
It used to be that riders would start out on smaller bikes and move up.
But there are very few starter bikes around now, mostly because they don't sell, said Scott Friday of Huntsville, who runs a Web site called Two-Wheeled Texans (twtex.com).
"And if you're 18, you don't want to show up somewhere on a little Podunk bike," he said. "You want 'respect.' "
But mastering a powerful sport bike requires training and skill, Mr. Friday said.
"I've ridden top-of-the-line sport bikes up in Arkansas, but I've got kids now, and I have a reason to come home," he said. "You jump on a bike like that and it's exhilarating to feel that kind of acceleration. But you really need discipline."

this is part of the four stories in one weekend bashing sport bike riders and particuarly stunters b/c these to dudes went to pats bike night and killed themselves on the way home taking a turn to fast.
