401k's a long term investment. if you choose your investment components wisely then youll make money over the long term. they should have set allocations that you could choose from. i would choose something semi aggressive since youre still young. it may go down now but 30 years from now you should be fine. its strange that your pops has less money now than if he wouldve put it in the bank but he may have went with a very conservative strategy = less risk = less return.

He was too aggressive. They really don't tell anyone anything about the 401k. They just send out a packet and say pick one. There is so much pressure to contribute here that they really should let people know how to do it. There are a lot of people ~10 years from retirement who have nothing after contributing for many years.

when i setup the 401k for my company my boy came in and did a seminar explaining how it works and how you should use it. If youre company just gave a packet and said choose 1 thats fucked up. Agressive is good for when youre younger so your pops account was probably good initially but as you get older you have to start toning down and get more into bonds rather than funds. The bonds give you guaranteed income rather than taking a chance investing in funds when the markets fucked and youre about to retire. ****** skanks. Thats fucked up. BUT if youre gonna invest in yours you should be aggressive now and they should be able to provide you a risk tolerance questionnaire which will show what allocations you should choose to know you'll be where you need to be at retirement.

:YEAH When I had dough in my 401k I made 25% the first year but the market was also doing a lot better than it is now. Its fucked now but zuki's still good coz hes got a ways to go before retirement.
