Portland is the biggest city in Maine. While it is a fun drinking town, there isn't a lot of nature close by.

The Rangeley area is really nice. It's a lake that's in the mountains. Old Orchard Beach is on the ocean and close to portland. Depends what kind of camping you wanna do. My wife and I are doing a little wilderness camping pretty soon. It's basically a camp site out in the middle of nowhere with nobody around for miles.

 

When this happens in the winter, it's called a Nor-Easter and we get hammered with snow. I've seen storms where we got 4' of snow.
