It's Federal income tax, which makes sense not that I think about it. We used our current income vs. taxes withheld to calculate our tax rate. Medicare, Social security, and state income tax is a flat rate. The federal income tax is a tiered system so the last dollar you make is taxed more than the first dollar you make.

Federal income tax went up 20%, or twice what my raise was. I wonder if this means I will get a fat refund now?

Are you being an *** or did you completely miss the point of the shirt? Also, country music blows unless it's old Hank Williams Jr. or Johnny Cash. Not that I really consider most of Johnny Cash's stuff country.

$14 in 401K
=$21
Federal taxes were $28.09 more than I had anticipated, so that works out close enough.

I got the point of the shirt, I just didn't want to come out and directly translate it for folks who didn't get it.

My brain burner for tonight:
Should I change my federal witholdings?
My pay increases, and my tax liability increases by the yearly pay increase minus the additional 401K contributions times 0.25

My tax writeoffs stay the same: mortgage, property taxes, vehicle registrations, charitable donations, student loan interest, etc. etc.

So I will have to pay all of the taxes on that increase, so actually if they taxed the raise 20% instead of 10% and i will owe 25% on it, I should go from having 3 deductions to 2 deductions.

Not really, same tax bracket but it is a tricky jew accountant trick.

We pay 10% on the first 8025 we earn
15% on the money we earn between 8025-32,550
25% on the money we earn over 32,550

So when we calculated our after tax raises, we just took the percentage of pre-tax to post tax dollars and calculated it that way, but the 10 and 15% skewed us into thinking we were going to get taxed less than we are. Since every dollar of our raise was in the 25% tax braket.

I always used 0.76 as a multiplier to see what a raise would get me. It works great for a one time bonus, but I need to adjust my raise conversion factor to 0.60
