run regular motor oil in them? also can you fire a motor up before you put it in bike
can u fire the motor up before u put it in? to make sure its good. also tired of all the rumors is it bad to run 10w-30 pensoil in the bike or regular walmart oil let me know thanks!
Re: run regular motor oil in them? also can you fire a motor up before you put it in bike
ur not supposed to run car type oils in a motorcycle because cars don't have a wet clutch so therefore it has different properties. i've heard of peoples clutches slipping and what not but i don't have any personal experience cuz i run motorcycle oil...as for starting the motor outside of the bike, it is do-able just need to hook up ur harness and stuff outside the bike
Re: run regular motor oil in them? also can you fire a motor up before you put it in bike
ok, i worried about this back when i raced so i did research on it. Do a search online for oil testing at universities. A lot of colleges do testing on this stuff for projects. They give straight fact numbers on which oil has the best breakdown properties and sheer properties and all that jargon. Look up a couple different ones. When i did it, i noticed standard castrol GTX was rated in the top of almost all of them, and this includes high end motorcycle oils also. Now, this is for conventional oils, i never run synthetics cause i think they are just bullshit anyways. So the sheer properties of my standard castrol GTX is up to par with motorcycle conventional oil that's 5 times the cost....well, for that i can change my oil 5 times as often.
also, do'nt use anything with a friction inhibitor. You have a wet clutch and that would ruin it. I have 19k miles on my 929 with standard 10w30 (20w50 in the summer) castrol gtx and i do 12's, 12 burn outs, rev limiter coasters...my bike is always doing rev limiter something and i'm on stock clutch too. The main thing is to change the oil often. No matter how good an oil is, it's going to break down and that's when it doesn't protect as much. You'd be better off using cheaper oil and changing it every 1500 miles than expensive oil and changing it every 3k miles. Keeps fresh oil in it. I do mine about every 2k miles and the oil comes out still looking like oil, not just black crud.
hope that helps anything.
also, yes, motor can be started out of a bike, just not easy to do. gotta do some rigging.

Yo binder how many quarts do you put in your bike, I run about a half quart over but forgot what the regular amount was. Let me know the exact amount you put in your bike that is including overflow oil to keep from locking my motor up.
Thanks Justin
Thanks Justin

and whoever uses a gallon in their 929, ed or whatever, 1 gallon is just BARELY the recommended ammount. if you change the filter and put 1 gallon into it, it'll be at hte bottom of the fill line standing straight up and down, so kinda low. you need to put that gallon, then 1 more quart in it and it'll be perfect. i usually leave it on the kickstand and fill it until i just barely see hte oil in the window.
also, you coming up to chicago with chad on saturday?
