Question for experienced stunters

I am just curious regarding how you actually learned to do wheelies.

Riders who have tons of experience stunting always make it look so easy, like you were born doing it.

My questions for you guys are:

How long after you started riding did it take you to learn to wheelie? Were you always riding since you were really young (like some racers who begin riding dirt bikes at like 5)? From when you first attempted doing wheelies how long did it take you to do them well (weeks, months, years)? Did you start out clutching it or work up to that method? Did you wreck often when going through the learning process? Did you get hurt often? What kind of bike did you learn on? Did you start wheelieing on sportbikes or dirtbikes first? Were you paranoid about messing up your bike or did you learn on a beater/junk bike to play it safe?

I am far from a professional rider let alone stunt rider. But I would really like to know how some of you got there.

Thanks

go at your own pace, i got my first rocket in december and now im doing 2nd gear stand ups, tank wheelies, high chairs you name it, you have to be consistant on your practice. take advice but do what you feel is right. go at your own rate you crash when you try to go out of your limit always feel comfortable in what you are doing.

Everybody has a different learning curve and like everything in life...practice makes perfect. Never judge your riding to others and always go at your own pace. Do for yourself and not for others or you might end up hurting yourself. Dedicated riders do it because it is in their blood and is a way of life. Remeber, If you are doing it to fit in and be cool then your intentions are all wrong and should find a cheaper hobby. If you are worried about your bikes appearance than stunting is probably not for you.

Recommended Bike: Anything used and under $5,000

Techniques: Whatever you feel comfortable with

I have totaled out 3-4 bikes during my involvement in stunting and am currently on my 7th bike.

I agree with the guys about taking your own pace. I started out on a cruiser, rode the hell out it(including wheelies). I haven't wrecked yet in a wheelie because I practice and don't really push my comfort level. That comes with practice and patience. Some of the guys I've ridden with this summer are at the same level as myself, we go out and practice in a small group out in the middle of no where. Great times, we video tape, and add it to the collection. It's great to look back and see how much our riding has improved. Just remember, one step at a time, you'll get there.

What about clutch or power wheelies. Which did you start with?

Did you risk your prize sportbikes to learn or did you have a trashy dirt bike or something? Is it inevitable to crash the bike while learning or did anyone manage to learn without any incidents?

How long did it take you to finally achieve a wheelie?

Honestly bro.. you could try for the rest of your life to do a 2 mile wheelie... it all deopends on how fast you learn, each person is differnt, not everyone learns in a week nor 6 months, it`s all in yourself. Starting off you may wanna power wheelies to get used to the bike coming up.. then after being able to do that easily, start hitting the clutch wheelies and go from there.. pick what bike you wanna learn on. i basicly learned on a 2000 GSX-R 750 when it was new, went through one tranny. one clutch, and 3( three ) valves getting busted.. STAY THE HELL OFF REV LIMITOR!

Did you end up trashing your GSXR 750 at all or did you manage to learn without ever hurting the exterior?

my bike hit the ground 2 times ever, once at a complete stop from doing a stoppie.. and once i threw it down on purpose in memory of carl... i learned slowly to make sure i didn`t bust my *** .. ended up busting my *** 2 times and had nothing to do with stunting.. other azzholes out there... no i didn`t trash it up.. but used plastic off ebay, save the good ****, you can get a whole set for under 500. that are half way decent

I have been stunting hard for 3 years.. and i have NOT perfected a wheelie, if i had perfected it, i would be up there with Kyle and the rest of them badazz fawkers! So i just go day by day trying to get the **** down to where these guys don`t make me look stupid.. Practice man, it`s the only way you`ll get better, the more you do it the better ya get! live by it!

i'd say work on bouncing wheelies at first the bouncing is better than just powering because you can do it at a little lower speeds and you'll feel more comfortabe...do little ones that you are comfortable with...then when you can do the little ones without the "oh ****" factor go a little higher but don't push it.
all you will do is go too high and make yerself scared of the bike coming up
then start clutching them up a little at a time and get used to slipping the clutch just right....

and it kant be stated enough...PRACTICE ALOT

kyle woods said it best (although i can't remember exact words)
"we practiced 7 days a week 5 hours a day for 3 years to get where we are now"

and as far as bike selection find something cheap with a decent amount of power you will wreck sometime rather it's yer foult or not...i don't suggest a 900rr or a gixxer 1k as a first stunter, i started on a zx1100 GPZ which is like a 500lb bike
cuz if you get a heavy bike you have to actually try to get a good wheelie and when you finally get a lighter bike it is much easier to control
me personally i still don't have wheelies on lock but i can do alot of the "acrobatics" cuz i feel the balance experience it gives is beneficial
i have only been riding since last november
that is when i got my first bike and learned to ride in the alley behind my house
now i'm stunting an rc51 which i have yet to see someone else stunt cuz it's not exactly easy to wheelie on either
but i do it with ease cuz i have the skillz now and it's not the bike doing all the stunting
however i am in the market for a 900rr as a new practice bike to learn new stuff on

holy crap i'm writing a book...sorry bout that
anyhoo this is my expenence hope it helps some
