Another homemade cage thread!

So i started working on a cage a week ago and am stuck right now. Everything is apart waiting for some other parts so I figured I'd get your opinions. I know that a lot of cages go under the headers but I was thinking on this go between the headers and engine block. kinda give it dual sliders. shoot me opinions please.

I was thinking welding a bar between the two pipes on one end and making a bracket on the pipe to mount it on the other end. Kinda in the design phase so still working out the kinks.

Something like this!!!!

Bad idea unless you do a third hard mount... the bar will just pivot on the motor/frame mount and **** your exhaust or even you head up

Your on the right path just make a mount at the pivot point of the SA and a smaller cross mount at the bottom either infront or behind (like the upper one in the mock up pic) and connect the dots.

Ya I figured that wouldnt work after I posted bc I could only weld it like a T and first hard drop itd snap when shifted. Im also planning on mounting to the SA pivot, I already have a bracket made but wanted a dual slider and just trying different ideas. Hopefully ill fogure it out and finish making it in the next week.

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

Its just the SA pivot to the front motor mount is such a short distance it makes for a weird design

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

what you had on there would work... it's probably overkill but you just need a thrid frame point and the pivot point is good just make a 4th bar down below and your in the money

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

now go from the main slider point back to the SA and you have a cage that will hold up quite well for a home made special. make sure to make that pipe that runs through the headers two pieces so you can remove the cage dont weld it all together

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

So I got to working on the cage some more, finally got a pipe bender. So far this is what I have. Seems like it wouldn't be as big of a shin buster as other cages. thoughts?

Curious as why you say move the bend? Will it not work how I have it?

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

looks good. I think it would work great. But that bend is pretty far out. the farther out the more it acts like a lever arm and more torque is created at the mount points in your cage. Thus, i think he suggest mounting it closer to strengthen the overall cage.

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

i ran out of pipe but finally got the design. already have a small pipe going through the plastics right near the headers. this a good design? I kept the pipe to the main slider bc I llike wider cages and it seems to work well with the design.

I'm not worried about it being a shin buster. My shins come nowhere near it when shifting or braking, and i tested it for clearance with my legs before I welded it all up

It's not the shifting or breaking that kills shins its the mouse trapping...and bringing it down from the 12 bar.

Re: Another homemade cage thread!

All tac-welded together, have to grind it down and put some nice beads on it. not the prettiest cage nor anywhere near symmetrically( all hand cut and hand grinded as close to perfect as I could) but all in all im happy. getting it painted and installing this week!
