help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

I stunted a 900rr then a gixxer and never ever had a problem with the heat issue. I bout a 06 636 and it over heats after I ride 20-30 min. I only ride in the lot and the guy I got the bike from has it zip tied up and its pretty close to the header. Ive ran water wetter and it still over heats. Ive talked to alot of guys who own these bikes and they say its a Kawi thing. ?????? Is there something to do that makes this better? Im thinking its partally because the radiator is so damn close to the header. The fan is touching it

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

riding around with your idle up and not getting alot of air across the radiator seems to make alot of 636's overheat , second fan seems to be the common fix

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

get the fan/rad. AWAY from the hedder...that is your biggest issue it sounds like..then if its still hot get a 2nd fan mount for a r6 fan and wire it and your stocker to run when you want them to off a toggle switch..if its still overheating you have a bigger issue like a stuck thermostat or air in system or bad rad cap..i run a NDC rad cage with 2nd r6 fan mount and i can kill the lot until im tired and my bike rarely goes over 212....

hardwire the fan and see if you still overheat. I had the same issue with my GF's 636 and as it turned out, the radiator had corrosion and would not cool off. I replaced the radiator and it hasn't overheated since then. I heard that putting CLR will breakaway any sediment etc in the radiator. my 636 is hardwired and it never overheats.

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

loogie i also have the same setup as you for my 636 and sometimes it runs perfect around 205-210 in the lot and the other day i rode to pittsburgh and it shot to 241 in the city at my second stop light. and this morning with it being 65 out it was running like 220 and climbing on my way to work.

think thats a sticky thermostat issue? i have PURE engine ice, made sure no old coolant or anything else was in there and i have the second fan but more often than not lately its running really really hot down the highway even.

thoughts please?

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

if you got two fans blowing in the right direction and the radiator is full it sure sounds like a thermostat issue..

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

so since im waiting on my thermostat to get here ive been thinking. why not just run w/o the thermo? that way it constantly circulates for lower overall temp. isn't that what we're after here?

some times running no thermostat at all can make a bike over heat because the coolant is moving too fast and doesnt have enough time to transfer heat but if you have two fans you may be fine with no thermostat because there will be alot more air going across the radiator ..

it will however take longer for the bike to warn up and in cool weather on the street it may run too cool and that will cause the bike to run rich ..

I was actually thinkin about what if you ran no thermostat an i thought the same thing, it would run cooler for a few more mins but the stay hot cause no heat transfer..... im curious if anyone has done this?

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

loogie im about to follow your lead. i put a new factory thermostat in and not even a day later im having the same issues. about 205-210 down the highway at normal speeds but i can get it to like 190 if i triple digit it, and the radiator is cold to the touch so i know my thermostat is still messed up.

im just gonna do what you did and run no thermo and see what happens. yeah it may run cold on the street but id rather run cold and rich for street riding than hot as hell everytime i stop.

thermostats are there for a reason to keep it in a ball park heat range if you take it out the antifreeze will just flow right thru and never have time to cool down in the rad there for how would you get cooler temps

Re: help me out Kawi guys. Overheating?

i took my thermo out and its perfect. its a bit cold in the streets for a 636 like 175-180 but thats normal for most bikes. and in the lot ill hang out idle up for 10 min and never top 210 but my second fan is wired constant w/ignition and i have engine ice in it.

i dont mind the colder street temps, sometimes it'll drop to like 165 or so on a late night riding fast but its worth it to not have my bike at 225 or higher hahah.
