probably a dumb question....

alright, so, ive been riding since i was like 8 years old, im now 23, rode dirt all the way up till about 4 years ago and got a 04 600rr. now, i rode quads for years n years, i can slow wheelie, reach back touch the ground, hold the front grab bar, 1 handed wheelies, spreaders, seat stands, ya kno all that ****....i have the concept of brake control down pat...on a quad... now when i bought my 600 after a few months of havin it, i could ride a 1.5 mile stand up using the brake to control it till my arms got tired...and i could pull em up at like 10-15 mph and keep em pretty slow. i sold the 600 and bought an 06 zx10 for my "nice bike" next spring im buying a stunt bike...i love riding wheelies and doin stoppies, i dont kno why i cant ride a very slow wheelie on the bike like i can on a quad, i think it was because i didnt wanna wreck my bike cuz it was my only one and it was a nice bike...my question is, from all the riding eperience i have and being able to ride wheelies like i can on the quad and on my bike, did it take u guys very long to get slow wheelies down on a bike? i ran like 8 psi in my rear tire on my 6, and i was -1 +8, i could ride a pretty slow wheelie just i would gain speed gradually, im so used to a quad brake the bike doesnt feels as responsive brake wise.... sorry for the long post....

I'm still workin on slow stuff but 2nd and 3rd down the interstate or back roads is no big deal I can kill those 3mi plus... but slow stuff is a little more sketchy for me, I don't have a HB and never have but on a 4 wheeler its pretty easy to do slow stuff b/c you don't have to ever worry about looping unless you just really eff up, also there's no side to side control needed on a wheeler. I can combo like the McDonald's drive up menu on a 4wheeler but I'd fail miserably if I tried to do the same on a bike. Just get a 12 bar and cage and go to a lot one morning and take plenty of patience you'll need it, I didn't ever take enough and always left hot, tired and pissed. Just stay with it and eventually you'll get it on lock. Just practice, practice and don't push yourself too hard that's when folks get hurt.

i kno i can do all that slow stuff, id be happy to be able to do circles lol.....but i think it was just thought of looping my bike and nnot having n e thing to ride, if i had a bike that i didnt care for it to hit the ground, id worry less...i kno how to do it, its just actually doing it i guess...

i'm not very good, but only two pieces of advice i can give you is 1) that bike has a really high bp and 2) you can go back further, you just gotta replace the "oh ****! i'm gonna jump off" feeling with the "oh ****! time to smash the brake" feeling.

Re: probably a dumb question....

Probably the most confusing thing to beginners when learning to slow it down is the multiple variables involved. Its hard to figure out the ratio between throttle and brake and body positioning and launch height. The best way to solve this is to eliminate one of the variables by just focusing on locking your throttle hand and using your brake to control the height of the front wheel. You will burn through brake pads quickly like this though so make sure you check them every time you ride. Over time though you will get the hang of it. REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION.

As far as the ***** factor though, its much much much worse to crash going fast than slow obviously. Just keep that in mind when you are talking yourself into launching it high from the start and keeping it behind bp. The worst thing that will happen (if you are using your brake) is that you will hit 12 and step off the back, and maybe you will have to jump off, but you will probably still land on your feet. My first introduction to 12 was trying to learn idle and i went back too far and smashed my tail and exhaust because i didn't have a bar. I just stepped off the back and guided the bike as it spun around with me and at it down on it's front wheel. Its not something you can even plan for, it just happens and your body will react. Seriously the more time you spend with it the more comfortable you get. Think of riding a huge roller coaster like 200 times in a row, after a while you will not be freaked out at all.

Also video tape that ****, cause it ALWAYS feels like you are going to flip it when you still have like 2 feet of room between the ground and your tail.

Re: probably a dumb question....

what i've noticed

quads dont have a side-to-side balance problem. on a bike you technically have 2 bp's. back and forth and side-to-side. the slower you go the harder it is to adjust your side-to side.

also IMO quads have awesome low-end...which gives you room for error when it comes to staying balanced. On a bike you have a smaller threshold of where the front wheel needs to be in order to keep it balanced/recoverable. This means your slow stuff is going to be primarily at or behind balance point, and using the brake to adjust your front wheel height.

Now i'm not going to tell you to hit the lot with a 10R, but it is definately possible to slow that wheelie down to lot status. Wear your gear, cut all emotional ties with your bike, and practice.

remember- If you dont risk it all, you'll never learn it all.

Re: probably a dumb question....

i just figured being able to ride a quad like i do would give me the brake control practice that i would need for a bike...like i said, i could pull it up at 10 mph and keep it there for like a half a block or so then i start gaining speed so i balanced it side to side and used my brake, its just the though of droppin te bike at the time, but soon as i get my stunt bike i think it wont bother me as much. another question....actually a couple...what rpm u guys set ur bikes at, ive heard everything from 3k - 5k, also when you havve the big sprocket on, do you pull the bike up in first? when i was -1, +8, id start off in second and pull em up....last question, how can you make the rear brake more responsive. new caliper/master cylinder? braided lines?
