Re: oil....

I have used both, ran into a few times when the need to ride was more important than the 2 day wait for the honda shop to open. but im sure there is a reason why motorcycle oil is not car oil. could be the price tag, or how it breaks down. but if it last up to so much more rpms an resists breakdown more why the **** dont we use it in cars? I guess really the only way to know is buy about a dozen bikes a run half with cycle oil an half with car oil an see how they explode?

Re: oil....

we have wet clutch systems and motorcycle oil is formulated for clutches as well as keeping the motor lubed.. unlike car oil

Re: oil....

Don't listen to the people who make **** up, listen to the people who have experience!

I've been running "car oil" (it doesn't say anywhere on the bottle "car oil") in my f4i from 12k miles tell 43k miles right now, stock clutch, rev limiter pretty much daily.

I've even ran fully synthetic energy conserving oil for over 2k miles, exactly what people say make your clutch slip.

Re: oil....

there is teflon in car oil that coats your clutch, its not the end of the world if you use car oil in it but ive noticed a smoother running bike running motorcycle oil numerous times.

Re: oil....

If your not too worried about it than go to autozone and buy some motorcycle oil there. It is much cheaper than dealer oil and it is still specifically formulated for motorcycles. You dont have to wait for the dealer to open and at the same time your still getting motorcycle oil. Some walmarts sell motorcycle oil as well and it is still cheaper than the dealer. I use moto oil from autozone and havent had any problems. The first time I went to the dealer (yamaha) for oil and a filter I almost had a heart attack when it was almost 60 bucks. I get a motorcycle filter from walmart and oil from autozone for a little less than half that price.

Re: oil....

I heard from a VP at royal purple that "motorcycle oil" has more detergents in it. something about the EPA and stuff wont let them use it in "car" oil, but can if its for motorcycles

Its been my experience that as long as youre on par with your oil change intervals, you should be fine with anything that's the proper viscosity.

since 12k miles on my f4i, I've ran nothing but 'car oil'

I'm at 43k miles now, stock clutch..

I know plenty of people who burn their clutch up on bikes with less then 15k miles TOTAL, running their manufacturers oil
