They were sold in the US. A Yamaha dealer had to take part in some sort of race program to get one but they were obtainable. I saw and touched one at a dealer in Ohio in 2000.

R7's were a bit of a gimmick. all the hype and money and everyone I spoke to said they were slow as **** unless you put the road race kit in it, I guess it was cams and some other crap and from there it would run with all the liter bikes in its day. I thought they were made for 2-3 years? hmmm.... Its still a sweet bike just because its exotic.
