Wont shift to 2nd while your riding the bike? Or wont to 2nd when the bike is off or not moving?

The Kawi transmissions have a system that is called "positive neutral", this prevents you from being able to upshift past neutral when the bike isnt rolling...Basically you have to ride the bike to get into 2nd once youve gone down to neutral or 1st...

If your not riding the bike and cant get into 2nd, nothing is wrong you just cant do that with the bike not moving..

Re: 636 wont shift up

so its on the stand, nuetral and kickstand swtich passed/unhooked. i turn the wheel by hand and it'll shift 1st but not to 2nd. i hit the starter and it cranks, same thing, wont go 2nd

is this a tension/pressure thing? where the bike has to be absolutely on the ground rolling and on to go into 2/3/4/5/6?

The transmission has to be spinning a certain speed to get into 2nd....The motor has to be running and the bike has to be moving, or you have to spin the wheel...You cant do it with the motor not running!

Re: 636 wont shift up

not having the right angle on the part that bolts on the motor will make it hard to get in second also

+1 make sure your shift linkage isn't hitting anything to prevent it from shifting too.

Re: 636 wont shift up

i kinda got the same problem, maybe you guys can help, I bought my girl a 94 katana 750 (junk) i know but she doesnt need a fuel injected bike lol. She knows how to ride it and shift right. ONe day she was riding it, and when she shifted into 3rd it was like the bike was in neutral, a had to almost dropkick the shifter to sut it back down to 2nd, and then i rode it home for her. !st and 2nd gear are fine, there rest idk? What do you think, bad synchros or a bent shift fork?

Re: 636 wont shift up

thats kinda what i was thinking, im the 4th owner, and in my opinion katanas are junk, but my girl wanted to ride with me, i picked it up for $700, i couldnt pass it up. Do you have to split the cases to fix it... Katana 600 trans will work if i swap out my cylinders and head wont it? Thanks

Re: 636 wont shift up

lol, lets get some more opinions. you guys think my old lady deserves a new bike. I know where theres a 98 gsxr 750 at for $1000, the guy rolled it over on a stoppie and it just has cosmetic bullshit wrong with it. Is the gsxr much quicker than the her katana 750?
