gas cap relocation

ive seen a couple pictures of guys tanks where theyve moved their gas cap up to the front of the tank. was wondering whats all invovled in that? pertaining to the vent tubes inside and does the cutting/welding hurt the inner lining of the tank? cuz i thought it was specially lined so it doesnt rust, but then if you cut and weld it maybe that would rust?

Re: gas cap relocation

What would be the point of doing that anyway? It seems like a huge effort for no cause to me Kinda like ricers that remold their trunks so the license plate is recessed at an angle. In all seriousness though, there any benefit to doing this?

the inside is what rusts

And once that coating inside melts, it makes the tank rust.. But should still last a few years.... But might start plugging up injectors eventually!

My tank just from having a radiator repair shop braze it, I could already see rust spots inside the tank

You can buy kits to re-coat the inside, but I've heard mixed reviews... I've heard people restore 30 year old gas tanks with the kits and coat them and have them work fine... But I've also heard of people doing it to 5 year old gas tanks, and plugging up their fuel pump and injectors and having to trash the tank

because dependin on the dent you can push the fill cap in so much that it hits the bottom of the tank and it makes it a ten min effort to put 2 gal of gas in it (neil ) which is not fun to do time and time again ... not to mention it looks cool

+1 lol

my **** is like that, gotta kick the gas nozzle sideways so it don't spray back at me, and go as slow as I can

but eh oh well, when your tank only holds around 1.7-2 gallon it doesn't take too long

Re: gas cap relocation

On billd's new 09 r6 he relocated his tank to a screw cap style on off to the side. probably a hell of a lot easier to fill.

well like the others said my splash guard is bottomed out and i know that i could cut it out so it would fill up faster but if i could relocate the gas cap to the front of the tank it would also give me a whole lot more gas carrying capacity instead of losing all the area that is now above the gas cap line because its pushed down into the dent. and yes it also looks sweet as ****, oh and its also nice not to have gas cap bolts in the *** when u jump into the tank.

+2 on the slow fill!

I actually just picked up a new tank, going to figure something out too. I rode a friends F4i with a realllllly deeep dent and loved it! It was custom welded with a big lip and guages moulded in.

My current tank has a coating, like a red film on it for some reason. It was like that when i bought it, have had no problems.

beat your tank in properly and you won't ever have gas ***

Mine has never leaked except from the cracks I put in it, and had brazed shut

That side mount cap is SICK.. But would probably be a decent amount of work.. Not bad if you can halfway decently shape metal, and can weld it yourself...

I saw a 5th gen prelude up here in omaha my friend Turboglenn was tuning, it had a F4i gas cap as the gas cap.. It was ******* SICK! Makes me want one on my car
he said he just took a crappy f4i tank, cut the whole top off, welded it up, molded it in, and uses a f4i key to open it lol
