Brake boil ?

I had a session today been stunting for a month and I got idle staggard (foot in set) wheelies today rode about a hour and right before I cluch it up I noticed I had no brake now I just learned idle and I been hard on the brakes then about 5 minutes later they worked again is this normall and also my fluid is filled to the very top level should I take out some fluid would that help it from overheating when it exspands out or what thanx

Re: Brake boil ?

you boiled your brake fluid ..

when you boil it you should change it because it lowers the boiling temperature every time you do it..

when you fill it up only fill it to the full line, it is there to make sure you have enough room for the fluid to expand when it gets hot...

make sure to use a quality dot4 fluid , an inexpensive fluid to use is valvoline synthetic dot 3-4 and a little more expensive fluid would be motul rbf 600

i dont think dot 5 is a good idea because alot of dot 5 brake fluids have silicone in them and most street bike brake systems are not designed to run silicone ..

Re: Brake boil ?

brake fade = no brakes, the rotor/pads are overheating
brake boil = wheel locks up

either way just take breaks to cool **** down, until you stop killing the brake anyway

+1...the DOT 5 brake fluids are silicone. DOT 5.1 is the same fluid type as DOT 3 and DOT 4. If you mix the two types, it can lead to serious problems.

boiled fluid does what he described, pedal losses all pressure, than comes back once it cooled

Re: Brake boil ?

wait, why would the pedal lose pressure? all i know is one time i rode the brake and eventually locked my wheel up, it completely overpowered the engine, i cracked open one of the caliper bolts and it shot out like steam, then i rode home, true story

because he boiled the fluid and when it boils some of the fluid turns to gas till it cools down and gas compresses but brake fluid doesnt ..

you probably over filled yours

Re: Brake boil ?

brake fade is a result of the brake fluid boiling then turning into vapor ,which in then in turns your hydraulic brakes useless. air in your brakes will let your fluid become more likely to boil. dont use sythetic , make sure all the air is out, fill the res to the top so a little comes out when you place the cap on

theres a full line for a reason over filling it can cause the brakes to drag when they get hot because the fluid expands when heated ..

now im not saying this will always happen but i have seen it happen , why risk it ?

Re: Brake boil ?

+1 to OMR

no reason to run it FULL, just to the full line and your good.

I even run mine to the full line, with my reservoir BELOW my master cylinder, air still never gets in it

Re: Brake boil ?

I see HB resevoirs all the time that are below the master. If you were working the master with air getting into the resevoir line, wont this flow air into your system? Is this why we need to bleed HBs often?

there is no way for air to get into the line unless my bike is upside down, like COMPLETELY upside down

I haven't had to bleed my hand brake since I installed it, about a year ago

Re: Brake boil ?

mines pretty good, but when I first set it up i dont think I got 100% of the air out. That sounds like the key, once its good its good until you need to change fluid.

Hey towliee you have any new vids with clip ons yet? Watched your old ones pretty pumped on your style...

thats why i thought the inside of the cap had a rubber diaphram to give the expanding fluid somewhere to go , idk never had a problem
