Re: Titanium Sprockets

sprocket specialists makes aluminum sprockets with a titanium coating on the teeth, (allegedly)

Is that what ur talking about? I dont think anyone makes straight titanium sprockets yet. Man that would really be a pain in teh *** to cut.

Re: Titanium Sprockets

titanium is lighter than steel but not lighter than aluminum, stronger than aluminum but NOT STRONGER OR HARDER THAN STEEL. JUST MUCH LIGHTER. you wont believe how "soft" it is... trust me. And no titanium is not hard at all to machine, it mills, drills, taps, cuts just fine. But for a stunter steel sprockets would be best, if u can get em in ur size that is...

Those arent Ti, theyre steel on the outside and aluminum on the inside. Thats not a bad idea either, especially with big sprockets.

you must have better equipment than the rest of us. I ruined a bunch of drill bits and a diamond blade just making a Ti scrape bar plate, spraying oil on it the whole time too. Ti is WAYYYY harder than steel.

No your right, and hes probably talking about Ti even thou hes never worked with the material before...

TI is generally 4 times stronger then your average steel, and %40 lighter...

Anyone that has actually worked with TI should know this, its harder to cut, grind, drill, machine compared to steel......Even though its lighter then steel

BTW I can see a real Titanium sprocket easily costing $500+ to make....Youd be looking at about $250+ just for the Titanium blank to make it from, and any machine shop is going to charge you up the *** to machine it because its such a pain in the *** to work with, and eats up cutting tools like mad...

Just to give you an idea Im making Ti round bars right now, the bar stock is 48" long and .75" diameter...And each piece of solid rod cost me $160US, and its going to cost me another $50 each to have them bent cause they are TI...If it was steel they would bend them for me for free.....

did you see the "free replacement guarantee"

Please retain your invoice for proof of
purchase. Certain hybrid, project machines with engine transplants; mega
horsepower dune dragsters; machines with non-standard gearing; custom-
made sprockets, conversion kits, and machines using non-Sidewinder
drive chains
are not covered under this guarantee.

Re: Titanium Sprockets

If you take care of your chain a steel sprocket will last 30k+

And considering a CUSTOM steel sprocket is what $130 $150? I'd just go steel

Btw I have almost 10k on my aluminum vortex sprocket, still looks brand new like the day I bought it! But I also degrease and relube my chain weekly and always keep it perfectly adjusted

Re: Titanium Sprockets

why would you use a diamond blade on titanium??? did u get it confused with a brick?? i actually work at a specialty machine shop. dont quote me or get too nerdy, no metalurgical (spelling?) classes here, i just know its TENSILE strength is high, but it is soft on the surface, two totally different things. Yes i have machined titanium, ive made 4 pads for FI 12 bars, very easy stuff to work with... only bad thing is its "gummy" like SOFTER steels grades are when you mill it. ur gonna have a hard time convincing someone whos already machined it. ive owned titanium tools as well, u should see the difference between a pure titanium hammer and a steel one, you would think the titanium one was made of peuter... no biggie, just sayin...

and i also made a pad for the back of a round bar that was ground flat about 3"X2"X1/4" I must be skilled...

Sorry man I dont know you or your what you do, but what your saying is complete BS....Titanium is soft on the surface Yeah ok buddy

Heres some real info on Ti and how and why its hard to machine compared to steel

"Structural titanium alloys are coming in for increased use because they are light, ductile and have good fatigue and corrosion-resistance properties As a result, more manufacturing engineers are learning that machining these alloys can be a tricky job due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The problems that arise in drilling, turning, and grinding of titanium can be better understood if we look at these properties"

"Titanium's strength (80,000 PSI for pure titanium and 150,000 PSI and above for its alloys) is far greater than that of many alloy steels, giving it the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any of today's structural metals."

I don't know anything about TI..

But that statement, you can make about aluminum vs steel.. Aluminum has a higher strength-to-weight ratio then steel right?

exactly... strength to weight. remember i didnt mill a ****** valve body outa the ****, i made some 12 bars... oh and wait till u put it on ur bar. see how fast it wears down scrapin compared to ur old Steel one. then come back on here and gimme a lil update..
