Tire to retire my 636 (frame is about to split in half)

I rode my main stunt bike this past Sunday for the first time in months. Its sad to say but when the temp gets over 40 I get all excited to ride. So I had a great time riding all day with friends. I did notice when I jabbed my fropnt brakes hard on and off that I could feel my front end shifting back and fork. I was like wtf so I check out the normal stuff to make sure it was tight. It was so I kept riding all day.

I was fixing my radiator mounting brackets that night. This is what I found when I took the radiator down and removed my custom plate(for my kill switch override) that screws in the oem vin number tag holes in the frame

I am glad to have found this now than later. This had to have been cracking for a long time. For those that know my stoppie style it is similar to Ryan Cramer or Thew Blankstrom's. Just ***** to the wall fast top of 3rd or 4th gear. I don't bring it to balance point fast enough so I go faster to roll further. This could of split in half if I had not caught it.

I really can't bitch about it. This frame has been abused violently for about 4 years. I'm not welding it. Its going to the scrapyard.
RIP poor frame I am sorry I killed you

You think so? I have a guy who is a super serious tig welder. He has been welding my stuff since 2002. I had an 01 gixxer 750 frame do the same thing.
He welded the hell out of it and covered it all in diamond plate to reinforce it.
In the end it just started to crack in other spots. I winded up junking that one too. I feel that if it starts cracking like that its just never gonna stop no matter what you do . I 'd rather just get a new frame.
Guess I will show my guy the frame anyways to see what he thinks.

your right, eventually it will all start cracking, due to weakening around the welded area, but i def. think it could buy you another season, at least.

see what he says and what he'll charge you.....if its remotely close to a new frame....get the frame. If he can hook you up cheap and cut a section out and replace it with a plate and weld it beyond where the crack was....weld it.

yeah greg those are fixable as long as you get a TIG guy that knows what he's doing and you add some bracing... there are threads on here if you search that show how others braced theirs...

The frame im running now has 2+ hard seasons on it and it was welded and braced before last season and it's been great

Re: Tire to retire my 636 (frame is about to split in half)

Just dropped my other bike off at welder to have a busted subframe tab fixed.
I showed them the pics and they said they could beef it up if I want. Gonna strip the bike tonight and make a decide to scrap it or not.

T-necks idea of maybe getting another season out of it isn't so bad. This is the only bike I roll stoppies on and I don't think I will have the confidence unless we weld the **** out of this thing.

Weld it, powdercoat it, and sell it.

Re: Tire to retire my 636 (frame is about to split in half)

you can't weld over a crack and expect it to stop cracking.. you MUST drill a hole at the end of the crack then V-Grove the crack and do a full penetration weld then at least a 3/16" plate over it then 3/16 fillet the plate to frame. = occupation : Welder/Fabricator
