you shouldnt need a steel subframe on a F4i but yes if you build it too strong you can damage your frame tabs. there is a fine line beween stronger than factory and being too strong and destroying your frame.

Re: steel subframe vs. aluminum?

Here i would like to suggest you that I can get a bike that's just as good off eBay, and for about 400 bucks less. While I believe in but I am not sure steel is right for me. Or, I'm sure a lighter steel frame would be great, but I don't really have the time and energy to devote to watching eBay auctions and trying to snipe a frame that may or may not be as good a fit (which doesn't even begin to cover the possibility of eBay fraud or the fact that buying from my LBS would include free scheduled service and other perks for establishing a relationship). Obviously a new steel frame is going to be out of my price range (I've decided that the 900 bucks is as high as I'll go).

Re: steel subframe vs. aluminum?

make a renforced aluminium one..steel WILL break your tabs you want the s.f. to take the impact not the frame..i have a f4i s.f. for sale _split seat that could use some love or a custom banana seat turned to solo seat with aluminum faring and custom step plate. a one piece alloy s.f no plastcis needed

Planned obsolescence , do the math and figure out how strong the metal is and make a part on the sub-frame that will break right before everything else does.

Re: steel subframe vs. aluminum?

Tensile strength for most common aluminum is 37-42ksi . Common steel is between 50-70ksi. It would have to be some kind of frangible joint, i.e. a cast tab welded to the steel with a lower tensile than the aluminum.
