Wiped out - part of my knee numb. normal?
Wiped out - part of my knee numb. normal?
Hey guys,
I wiped out a few days ago going around 20-25mph on my dirt bike. I hit my knee when I went down and scraped it pretty good. I didn't think anything of it until I noticed that some of the area right underneith my knee is numb...meaning I can poke or touch it with something and don't feel it. The numb area is about 2"x2" and is beside the scrape. The knee itself feels ok though and doesn't hurt while walking, etc. Here is a picture:

The scrape doesn't bother me, but the fact that some of my knee is numb sucks. I'm wondering if anybody had something similar happen and if I should be worried.
Thanks in advance!

Yeah I had a skateboarding accident in '04 when I bombed a hill. All my weight (which is plenty, 225 lbs at the time) landed on my left knee. It blew up like a softball, and the skin lost it elasticity. And it has been completely numb for almost 5 years but I can still use it with no problems. It just aches a little bit when it rains. But other than that, it ain't no thang.

I've got the same thing just above my left knee from an accident when I was younger. Completely numb. Doesn't bother me at all. Never aches or anything. I can still feel pressure on it though. It's just below your knee anyway, it's not like you use it to feel for things :P

if it starts spreading go to a doc, a friend of mine had the numbness start in his toes and now its a little bit above his knee cant feel a thing. the doctors had some name for it but is was spreading nerve damage.

Yup, nerve damage. It could be due to the swelling putting pressure on the nerve or from blunt trauma... I'de give it about a week for the subdermal swelling to settle before I see a MD, better yet, your in Canada, Go see a Chiropractor. Just make sure he/she is CCEP (certified chiropractic extremity practitioner)

anytime u impact the skin like that your gonna find some numbness. ive had it a million times from 12 years of skating. it usually goes away after a month to a year.
