bought a f4i frame on ebay and the guy that sold it to me told me
"he didn't have a title, but it wasn't stolen or anything" ...well i only wanted it for the lot, and it was only $260, so i said **** it. in about a weak the bikes goin together, so i decided not to chance it and called my local dmv to have them check the vin#. they told me it was an out-of-state vin# and i should call my local police station "they could better help me". so, against my better judgement(i hate calling cops for anything) i called and they said they couldn't do it over the phone and had to send an officer out...i was like what the ****!! suprisingly, it all went well and he checked the vin# and it all came back clean"no warrants or liens of any kind".
then, he goes on to compliment me on my work and tells me i can get it registered as a custom at my local dmv..that i just need to get it inspected and they'll generate a new title for me and a shop down the road will stamp the new #'s in the frame(but he told me to leave the old #'s on, because they have to take pictures of the old numbers...???
my question is does he have custom and rebuilt confused or am i confused? anyone know the real story on this?

forgot...when the cop showed up i "accidentally" let my 130lb. giant shnauzer out.lol! he was like "that's a big dog", but the look on his face was priceless.
but seriously it was an accident.. honestly. i mean the cop showed up in like 10min...since when do cops get there that quick
sorry officer

Re: bought a f4i frame on ebay and the guy that sold it to me told me
rebuilt titles still hold the original make and model (i.e. honda f4i) while custom titles are for hand built choppers and the like. im pretty sure in NY state you cant get full coverage insurance on either, liability only.
Re: bought a f4i frame on ebay and the guy that sold it to me told me
thanks
. thats good to know. i should be able to get it done under rebuilt. all i need are mirrors and to wire my horn...wait no high beams
do i need those? Re: bought a f4i frame on ebay and the guy that sold it to me told me
i did this and i filled for lost title, and it didn't come back, so then i had to go to a title place and get the frame bonded, then titled..it cost me about $300 but i have a clean title to my bike

in kansas it's just a sticker they put on your steering neck that says rebuilt salvage motorcycle. Then you get a title in the mail that is identical to a normal title but it says rebuilt salvage motorcycle on it.
I took mine up.. all totally wrecked with a salvage title, but I rebuilt it as a SF'd stuntbike...
I had the DMV inspect it just so I could get a salvage title in KS instead of a stack of papers that came with the bike.
No plastics accept for a painted up acerbis and tail section, no turn signals, no headlights, no brake lights, hell, no lights period! LOL
No speedo, no mirrors, no windscreen, dented leaky gas tank, busted passenger peg, cut down brake and clutch lever, round bar all ground down, crash cage all scratched up, cut down akro exhaust.. ect, ect.
All of that **** and I STILL got my rebuilt status, and then I drove to state farm, had my agent inspect the bike and all he said was " wow! that's cool!!" and went in a wrote me up a FULL COVERAGE policy for it to go with the rest of my bikes, cars, and house insurance. And it was only like $120. a year for that policy with $500. deductable.
Now I can just go get a tag and be on the streets legally, but if I got stopped it will be a bunch of tickets I'm sure!!
That's how it happened for me, but heck, it sounds like you had good luck so far too...

same in florida its just a sticker they put on the frame under or near the vin, and the title is the same but were it says primary brand it states rebuilt. but when i did it i had to have everything turn signal headlight, the works. but they didnt jerk me around, i went down there nowing what i needed and it was pretty easy that time, but i have been jerked around before trying to get a rebuilt title. its usally the person who inspects it, if they want to be an *** or not.

each state is different. expect new york to have lot's of red tape. receipts for all parts must be kept!
rebuilt salvage...see here:

All the laws relating to "inspections" are public. Google them.
