when regearing my 636...
ok i wanna do it up, i already know what i wanna do with the sprocket size n all but when i put the new chain on i got a question concerning the master link. id love to put a clip type like i run on my dirt bikes but the guy at the dealership keeps telling me its dangerous on a street bike n that i needa use the press on style or what ever... i want that clip style so i can take the chain on n off easier to clean n lube well. i dont see how it could be dangerous if you put the clip on the correct direction. any opinions or suggestions on this would be great.

The pressed on one is safer. But I always runs the clip cuz I don't have the tool to press it on. I just keep an eye on the clip to make sure its not falling off. Never had one fall off yet so...

just buy the clip style. Your chain might have come with the rivet style but you can buy the link over the counter. Of course their gonna recommend rivet cause its probably more secure. I've never had either one break on me though.
Another option is just buy the tools to do both.

i would not run a clip link its just way to dangerous on a street bike that does 130 plus. but people above have diff opinions on that. just buy some extra press links there only like 5 bucks a piece and you only need a center bunch and a hammer to put them on in about 5 minutes.

if you broke it your not doing it right. I've used them all over half dozen times with no problems. Just takes patience.

ive been using clip style on all my bikes for the last 6 years and never had a problem with them. just dont ever take the chain off and then reinstall the same master link and clip. buy a new one anytime u take it off, theyre only like 7 dollars anyway.

using a rivet and a hammer is just asking for trouble.. One little fracture in the metal, and the rivet link will fail
Can't believe you wouldn't use a clip style, but then you'd ghetto a rivet style on

Re: when regearing my 636...
I never trust clip-links....Wont use them on my or my freinds bikes....If you ever see a chain fall off like I have, or see how many people come to my shop for work..And I tell them the clip is missing, and the only thing holding their chain together is LUCK....
The day I decided to never use one, was the day I seen my buddies track bike after the clip link failed...And his chain bounced off his swingarm, off the back of his race boot, and right through his tail section...If he wasnt wearing Daytona race boots he would have easily lost his foot...
Thats just my opinion/experience thou, some people have been using them for years with no problems...

a 'ghetto rigged' rivet link is NOT better then a properly installed clip style link..

i'm no guru but i've used both clip n rivets. i prefer the clip, when adding links i use the grinder for the ends to pop off the connecting plate. but for the master just press the link together throw ur clip in grab some robo pliers and MAKE SURE THE CLIPS ALL THE WAY IN! thats prob. why people have them pop off. i've had 1 clip break ever putting it on but the top plate wasnt down far enough n i rushed. other then that i run the clip on street bike and had the bike excess of 160 with no problems, no special tools needed, cheap to replace.
and thats the end of my paragraph
