when you buy a motor...

Just wanting to find out the way you guys usually do things when buying a motor so i dont make it harder than it needs to be and get ripped off...

-how do you guys know the actual mileage on the engine you are buying when the bike and odo it came out of isnt there?

-where do you feel its safest to buy motors? ebay, here, local...etc

-do you guys make sure the motor you just spent a grand on runs or hope for the best when you drop in the bike lol?

Re: when you buy a motor...

1 - find your ideal motor
2 - buy that ideal motor
3 - install your ideal motor
4 - go split your wig with your new ideal motor

You really don't know the actual mileage...you could take the persons word but most ppl are liars.

I'll only buy a motor that I can go in person and listen to it running. Or else I'll buy a smashed bike at a local auction and take my chances on the motor being good.

I'd never buy a motor from someone online that doesn't live close by.

Re: when you buy a motor...

to me mileage really does not matter as long as the motor does not smoke or pop out of any gears. i have bought about 5 motors on ebay with no problems except the last motor i bought, i bought a 03 r1 motor and was sent a 2000 r1 motor, was really pissed but ended up selling the motor for $300 more then i bought it for, :YEAH i was happy i made out on that one. i have also bought a few motors on criagslist but a few motors were not as the person claimed, so of course i did not buy them, just wasted gas and time.

Re: when you buy a motor...

not really... if your buying on here just make sure the person has been around for awhile and isnt someone like big r 508 who has a horrible track record for not shipping stuff or selling shady ****...

if your buying on ebay look at the persons feedback.. if they have any bad feedback reconsider, i know i have 100% feedback and i do what i can to keep it that way

if your buying on craigslist, well, check it out good 1st

Re: when you buy a motor...

tell you the truth i dont trust salvage yards at all. i would rather just buy it from a regular person. like 50 said if looking on ebay make sure the seller has good feedback, and craigslist make sure it seems ligit, if something rubs you the wrong way then its probably is to good to be ture. if you can by a wrecked bike that runs and pull the motor yourself and plus youll have spare parts :YEAH

Most importantly, run the engine numbers. You don't wanna buy a hot motor.

Re: when you buy a motor...

smartest thing to do, although not the legalist, is to buy a bike with no title for a grand. A lot of people buy bikes, then after a year dont want to make the payments on them.
Find one of those people, get the bike for a grand. Swap the motor, and keep all the electrical **** and back rim as spares. Sell the fairings and front end and a couple other parts and you'll make your money back.

Re: when you buy a motor...

Yeah no ****...the finance company still owns the bike and will report it stolen.

As far as my spare motor I got a local buyer wanting it. I'll probably go that route if he comes up with the cash.
