Talking clutch rod seal question

I have a gsxr 1000 04 and the chain busted and took out the clutch rod seal. I took it over to the dealer and they want to charge 800.00 for labor the part is four dollars is it that hard to change what do you all recomend. the bike has a slow leak of oil there. Is there any info on changing it my self???

Re: clutch rod seal question

never actually changed one but if it's any thing like a shift rod seal then it takes about two minutes to change ...

it would probably take longer to take the cover off if it's like a shift rod seal

Re: clutch rod seal question

the labor is 800.00 the part is 4.00. the dealer said the motor has to be taking out to change that seal. the cassing need to be pulled apart and then the seal can be replaced has any one done this before?

Re: clutch rod seal question

Its true, to replace the seal the motor must be removed and the cases split, you can get a way with only slightly splitting them but usually the seal dont last too long afterwards.

bubash is right.. im a gixa man and have done the same thing...

the seal is behind a lip in the cases thats why you need to split them to do the job properly.

Re: clutch rod seal question

OK... I did this same thing with my RSV Mille. & you think you guys had it bad.....

It was a hydrolic clutch so it had a master cyl. right there too....

I treid clutching up a first gear wheelie, and thought I bumped it into neutral and **** cuz I saw a green "N" light and I tacked out instead of wheelied... Little did I know, I had busted the chain in two right then... So instead of lookin at my bike, like a true stuntrider wanna-be.. I clicked that **** down back into first gear and tried again!! LOL
That's when **** got ugly...

It bound up my chain in between the countershaft and master cyl, cracked my motor, bent that shift rod a little bit, and exploded the chunks of aluminum that were cast into the case like little pedestals and threaded to recieve the maser cyl. Over $2,000. in just parts!!! what a drag huh?

I then just opted to stick to true stunter wanna-be form and called phil at motohaeven, ordered some AFAM and a 520 chain, bought some JB weld and spent a night in my barn playing doctor. 200,000 wheelies later, and 40,000 miles down the road and it was fine.. didn't leak a drop!

Those things always seem to wanna drag at a stop light if you're in gear with the clutch pulled in anyways, but after I put a barnett clutch in it would make a strange noise where that push rod would kinda rub against something for the first couple clutch pulls when the bike was cold.... But otherwise, you wouldv'e never have ben able to tell if I didn't tell you about it.

Just wanted to add a contrast to Bubash's story... good luck....

I refuse to use anything but FACTORY STOCK clutch/Parts in my bikes ive had nothing but trouble trying diff companies products....barnett/EBC JUNK

When **** like this happns it makes u wish u dident cheap out on the chain or try to be your own mechanic.. Chain is Very important and needs to be installed correctly or as u see above it causes serious damage i learned my lession already, now i get only 530 chains with the highest tinsel strength.

HUH??

kinda getting ahead of yourself bro. First off, that was my first bike I ever owned, I have only ben riding since 03.. and I never even had a dirtbike or moped or **** before that beast. I never had anyone tell me about proper bike maint. so I had to teach myself and that was the eye opener for that and I have never slacked on maint. since!

I'll go ahead and chock it up to inexperience with proper chain maintenence when this happened and that's it.
NOT from a cheap chain... Where the hell did you get that from??? It was the stock chain.

The reason the chain failed was cuz I lived down about 1/4 mile of gravel, bought my bike in Jan. and put about 10,000 miles on it in the first 8 months!!! Never once did I lube my chain though.. I got to where I knew all the pot holes, so I'd cruise at 60mph down the gravel and kick dust up and the winter's in Kansas are no punk trust me. Everything from road salts... to sand, mud, snow, and just all of that **** is what caused my chain to fry and pop under the pressure of that big twin.
Sorry, but no cheap chain here guy.

And actually that Barnett clutch was perfect for my streetbike, I loved it. it was just a bit thicker than stock, so it wanted to pull away if you revved it up at a stoplight in gear with the lever pulled in, no matter what you did. The ****** grabbed, and I mean right MEOW!

But havingt said that, I"ll never put anything but OEM in my stuntbikes. Iv'e had like 5 street bikes since that Aprilia, and Iv'e regeared and done chains on all of them and I only use the rivet style masters and keep them VERY well lubed now too!

But I also set all of my bikes up myself, do all my own mechanic work on them, paint them, and if you ask around I have some of the better lookin, and running bikes around my town.
And really, to be honest I have had no problems as a direct result of doin my own mechanical work other than strippin out a couple soft *** aluminum threads.
I prefer it like that actually....... UNless it's something major, then I give it to my friend Steve down at Smithers Customs in Olathe, KS(<shameless plug lol).... Danielle Jacksonilla takes his bike to Steve even if all he needs is his HB bled though so I kinda get what your'e saying. You probably have sponsors doin all your mechanical work too. I'm not that good yet I guess....

^shameless plug... haha

Re: clutch rod seal question

i blew the clutch basket apart on my 05 1000rr and one of the pieces that broke off cracked the case on the inside. half case and all the seals were like 1500 so i opted for a honda clutch kit, and a basket and some jb weld. sealed it up after some serious prep work.

when it comes to using any type of liquid sealer its 80% prep and 20 % application
