Re: 636 frame bracing

some times welding in a brace can actually make the frame weaker

Re: 636 frame bracing

dont powdercoat. the heat treatment makes the metal weaker. how did you crash and where did it break?

Re: 636 frame bracing

it didnt break... but i am gonna get frame checked...
an do you for sure know powdercoat makes frame weaker?
cause after welding bracing i can easily heat treat the frame back to spec at my work. we deal with aluminum extrusions. an then i can get powdercoated. but powdercoat its heated for so short i dont think it would change heat treat characteristiics as much as welding which is a continuos high heat in concentrated areas

Re: 636 frame bracing

Besides cracking on the outside and underneath, mine cracked on the inside, right in front of the air box, vertically following the frame air ports. After having everything welded, it cracked again along the welds. If i had kept the bike i would have welded thin aluminum plate on the inside, underneath and on outside. Good luck.

ya.. normally when welding, if it cracks again its right outside the welds.
thats why i want to heat treat the frame after bracing it.

im jus curious what others have done
an if anyone knows forsure whether powdercoating affects it

Re: 636 frame bracing

if you can heat treat the frame correctly then welding in a brace shouldn't be a problem at all and powdercoating temps are only like 350 400 degrees , i wouldn't think that would be enough to effect it

Re: 636 frame bracing

powdercoating doesen't weaken frames. It's not hot enough for long enough so don't worry about it. As far as bracing the thing most people do wrong is weld only the area that is weak/cracked, then it just cracks again out side the welds like you said. Go beyond it. Weld in big ************ braces that support large areas and spread the load/stress... like that one guy that filled in his whole frame on that f4i (f4i's don't need it though).

Re: 636 frame bracing

Mine cracked at the welds on the motormounts... That's where i'd probably brace it since that's where is the majority of the issues

I would plate in the whole front end area of the frame and make the plates go past the cast area in the front and contact some good metal, and also make the plating go down to the motor mount area, you gotta make em look like robo 636 to hold them together or just don't ever drop em!!

i have slammed my 03 dowm a million times and no problems in over two years , the secret is to keep your motor mounts tight ...

Re: 636 frame bracing

i really think they are as long as the motor mounts are kept tight , i learned almost every circle i know on this bike and thats alot of mouse trapps over the years ...

i have alot of broken f4 i frames towards the front of where that little loop connects , the f4i guys don't like to talk about it ...lol

Re: 636 frame bracing

Kyle if anything get some thick aluminum platting and brace from the neck were the fram dimples in and then flares out again. Gusset motor mount ear tabs. Maybe put a crossmemeber down inside but thats not really ness. As long as you heat treat it for the welding you will be fine. and powdercoat doesnt do weaken the frame at all not even a little.
