Re: steering head bearings?

If you have to TIGHTEN them, then they are probably worn and need replaced.

I don't know about newer yamahas, but I know the old 95 fzr600's had tapered bearings, which are WAY better then the honda ball bearings...

If yours need replaced, make sure to pickup a tapered bearing set, I know for a f4i, an all ***** bearing kit cost about $35

Btw the steering bearings are ONLY supposed to be at around 15-25ft lbs.. I believe f4i's are 20ft lbs! IF your front end is loose at 20ft lb, or whatever its supposed to be, then your bearings are shot.
If you over tighten them, it'll just make the bearings worse and make it harder to turn.

Have you tried tapered bearings?

Stock honda bearings suck.. Read about it on a goldwing forum They all talked crap on the ball bearings

Just looking at how diesel a set of tapered bearings are, they HAVE to work way better!

Tapered FTW! PS the shock preload tool in the factory toolkit can be used to tighten up the steering stem nuts.

Re: steering head bearings?

mine developed a flat spot, i think from being too tight. good for stoppies, bad for riding on 2 wheels
