question about drifting

so ive just started drifting my bike. but ive just been using all throttle. i just accelerate and lean into a turn and then snap the throttle and slide it out, a lot of times i can ride it out and haul *** out of them. but is this considered a bad way to drift? it feels pretty good but then again didnt we all as noobs think that power wheelies were the way to go? i also can only do a couple of them until the tire warms up and it starts to catch. so thats what got me thinking maybe i should try to learn to clutch them out. so what im asking:

do the good drifters on here always use the clutch?

Re: question about drifting

Almost everyone I know that drifts comes in hard on the rear brake and right when they kick the bike around they snap the clutch with about 1/2-3/4 throttle. I'm only speaking from what I've heard and tried myself... I suck at drifting but a couple guys I know are really good at it and that's what they say to do.

Re: question about drifting

Yeah lock up the tire.. Turn in and make sure the bike has a good lean angle then dump the clutch just a like a wheelie and then adjust throttle..That's it's better to give more and lowside than less and get owned lol

Yea high siding sucks I was killing some tight drifts yesterday. Untill my tire caught and threw me off. Didn't break anything just bruised my shoulder and hip.

Re: question about drifting

good post, been wondering about some "proper" ways to drift, without drifting your body across the ground.

ME?!

what do i know about drifting?!

well what i did when i was learning is jus get enough speed so when i hit the rear brake tire skids out or whatever an as soon as it skids enough to start leaning towards a lowside i would slip clutch an gas it hahaha...
you kinda get a feel for how much is to much an not enough gas... also be aware of your tire... worn out or hard tires obviously youll need less gas.. new or sticky tires you better get on it good otherwise your gonna highside... been there done that.. concussion whattttttttttt
hahahaha
but jus get up an do it again:YEAH

an once you start getn used to it.. you can drift all the time an anywere...
i love drifting before an after other sheot now...
Woo

ya an my OPINION is that drifitng an even touching the front brake turns it into a burnout!!!

if you still have questions.. watch this!:YEAH

Re: question about drifting

one thing that helped me was locking up the rear tire and sliding it around almost 180 degree's before droping the clutch. If i slid it only 90 degree's or so, I wasnt leaned over enough and couldnt break the tire free. But Im sure once your good at it you can slid it instantly or close to it.

ya thats true... esepcially when learning to drift... skid alittle an get errr leaned over alil more then needed an youll more likely lowside or get a good drift.. rather then slide short an highside like crazy ahha

jus take alot of practice like anything else... an plan on at the very least lowsiding alot.. haha if not some good highsides

Re: question about drifting

ok thanks for all the advice everyone. i have tried probably at least 100 times to lock the rear wheel and slide it out but everytime i snap out the clutch the bike just shoots out and lowsides. ive been sucessful 1 time like that but i ended up just sliding around to a stop and did a 180. thats why ive started just turning slow and then using the power seems more manageable but i think i need to learn to just clutch it a little softer.

im about to watch your vid krazykyle thanks for postin it.

Re: question about drifting

krazykyle: that vid was sick man!!!!! i can hear that you really dont need that much gas when you clutch it and are leaned over i guess the tire is already sliding you just have to keep it going. plus you are starting the drifts a lot slower than i can with power obviously because i have to get up into the power band first. i need to find an open lot to practice too so i can start going in circles, my strip i practice on just has a turn at the end and ive just been drifting around the turn.

I had already seen this video but after reading this thread it was nice to watch it again. It looks hard to get consistent drift, it seems to speed up after a bit and fly away. I like your style and your attitude Kyle!! Keep it up.
