winter riding

So i was wondering if anyone has ever put studs on the 50 and rode it on the ice. I know you guys in Alaska do it on your normal bike but did not know if you need more weight for it to work. Never really put studs in a tire before though, any site you know of that sell them and anywhere that could tell me how to put them on?

every once in a while a set will pop up on ebay. not sure who makes them, but you can put some in yourself. i think the company that makes some spikes is "kold kutters" or something like that. search on fiddy life you will find something i'm sure. people have vids, it looks pretty cool.

Re: winter riding

When you finish them make sure you don't let them touch anything but ice. They will get dull fast if you don't take care of them. I wrap mine with tire wraps every time my bike comes off the lake and they're as sharp as when I studded them. I used the hardened black ones too, a little more expensive but more durable.

Re: winter riding

hey crash411 can you post some pics of your finished products...I've never seen a street bike tire done up....

+1 on the taking care of them...however I used mine on a really hard packed motocross track once and it was the best traction I've ever had...

In the 2005-2006 street punishment dvd they did a 5-7 min part on ice. Looked fun as hell.

If my damn dirtbike would start in the cold i would stud it. The oil gets crazy heavy though and its a bitch to kick over.

what type of bike....I've ridin in the cold and it may be tough but just warm it up right when you pull it out of the garage...unless you are rocking like a 99 xr650 it should start with a good choke and a handful of kicks....

I know what you mean about kicking a cold motor, I used to ice race. I will get some pics of my streetbike tires on here, I used race rain take offs for studding but a regular streetbike tire works too (see Joe Beavers bikes pics on here from VMC)

I also wonder this....because on my dirt bike I had lugs that I would drive them into...but a street tire is not as thick as a dirtbike tire with lugs...wondering if driving them all the way through then using a grinder on the inside to smooth it out and run a tube?????
