BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
Question.....I've the opportunity to buy a wrecked bike that was left at a reputable Towing Company. it has been advertised for sale, considering they made every effort to get the lien holder/owner to pick it up. A TITLE IS NOT available on it, but a BILL OF SALE is. With that said, would the buyer (if me) be protected with the BILL OF SALE only? The frame could obviously not be sold to be as titled (not have a certificate of destruction or a salvage title)....thoughts?
Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
if the bike has been impounded for 45 days then the tow company can get a title for it as long as they did what is required of them as far as notifying the right people that they had the bike there
Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
I would say a no go in general. but what kind of bike what year and most importantly how much???? if its a couple hundred bucks then yea why not but if its more than that and you get fucked and some one comes and takes it then your out money.
and make sure the person selling is a reputable business. like get all the paper work. i would even recomend video taping the whole transaction so if you do get screwed over that really solid proof to take them to civil court to get your money back.

Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
yea like OMR says anything legit has a title in some way or fassion. no title 99.9 percent of the time means theres somethign shaddy or missing.

no way in hell its no where close to as good. I know some one who spent a weekend in country jail who had just a bill of sale. that dont mean ****. people type bill of sales on the computer and forge signatures theres nothing official about them at all. if the bike is truely legit theres some form of title.

Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
Ok.....it is a 07 600RR with 900 miles. A kid was killed in the wreck, the father does not want the bike, and the lienholder has been contacted numerous times with not response per the Towyard. the owner of the towyard, is sick about the whole deal because of the death and does not want the bike back on the street...which is why he will sell only to someone that will part it and not ride it. Is a bill of sale not enough to protect me legally even if i sold the frame stating that it had no title - Thoughts?

Maybe its true but how do you know he's really talling the truth about this sob story? The bikes probably hot and he told you this bs story so that you won't try to get a title and get them busted. They just want some money for a hot bike without paying the consequences.
Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
Every state's vehicle title and registration laws are different.
The tow yard should be able to get a title for it, if not, most states will allow you to look up the info on it at the DMV office for a small fee or for free as long as you have the VIN. At the very least you can call the police department and tell them you might buy a vehicle, provide them the VIN, and they will tell you if it's been reported stolen or not.
If you get the information on the vehicle from the DMV (and it's not stolen) you can likely get a surety bond for the bike and get it titled.
To do that start with the VIN at the DMV, ask them what to do, then contact a bond company (many auto insurance agencies provide surerty bonds, will usually be in their ad in the yellow pages or on their web site) and go from there.
AR, I assume that's Arkansas. I'm in Texas, Arkansas used to have REALLY lax laws regarding vehicle titles.
There is a drag strip in the Dallas area in the 'hood, every baller car out there and slammed stretched bike had AR plates on it, title washing used to be pretty popular out there.
A bill of sale won't mean **** to most cops, if it's hot you will get charged with a felony in most states, despite the bill of sale the tow-lot provided. You can probably beat it, but do you REALLY want to deal with that?

Oh, and if you don't buy it for whatever reason PM me the VIN and let me know where it's at, I'll buy it as long as it's legit.
This may sound like BS, but if the bike is priced right, not hot, and I buy it, I'll paypal you a finders fee

I'm pulling the flag on that.

Because I knew the kid that was killed, and know the salesman at the Honda show is the one that told me about it and where i could go to get it....what i dont know is what all is entailed with the towyard getting a salvage certificate for it.
Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
Any tow hard can get a title within 45 days, as long as they have 3 clippings fro m a news paper showing they were trying to find the owner.
Or you have a hotbox.
Re: BIKE TITLE/NO TITLE/BILL of Sale thoughts?
As soon as the tow yard gets the bikes the vin goes into the system where it can easily be traced. after 45 days, given no one has come to claim the bike the tow yard gets a new title made out in thier name.
My dad has a shop and this is how I get my bikes. So I may know what Im talking about here.
