1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

Hello everyone knew to the forums. I am an Amatuer MX racer and ride street on an 03 R6. I have good bike handling skills and am looking to up the stunts. I am able to ride slow wheelies pretty much as far as I want. Bad experience (expensive) with stoppies, so I do not do those anymore. My R6 is to nice again to continue to learn on and I am looking at a 1996 CBR 900rr. I have not seen it in person yet but I work as a motorcycle tech and have worked on some of these. They feel like a big tanker compared to my R6 but how are they for starting out stunting. I am not ready to commit alot of $$$ to a stunt bike yet. My 03 may become one when I buy a new R6. Any comments on the CBR appreciated.

Yeah, it's an awesome bike. I got a '94, love it. Is a bit tougher to stunt than a fi 600, but you'll definitly enjoy it. And ya know, they'll run for over an hour w/o oil in them. Don't ask how i know this...

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

I work as a repair tech so I am trying to work a deal out with some parts and acces. for this guys other bike. He was willing to go $1700 outright. It also has a clean not salvaged title. But I will probably not register it and just transport to a spot. It has fatbars and some ugly streetfighter ligths on it plus a cage and 12 bar setup looks pretty clean nothing looks hacked. I will ditch the lights though and go with an Acerbis unit. What is this bikes approx value? I am just scared of the weight I know how light my R6 feels compared to one of these. But I am sure they are pretty tough. Any other cooments about the 900RR or any $$$$ value guesses. Thanks again guys. Oh and of course if I can get it for trade I will sav alot getting the parts at cost.

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

Thanks, I will post some pics as soon as I get it. I am really looking forward to getting it and starting to work out some new stuff. We all know there is no way in hell to keep a bike nice while learning this stuff. I hate even thinking about how much $$$ I wasted on my R-6 after flipping 2 stoppies. Well the second time was not so bad, the bike smacking me square on the back and smashing my face into the ground really took alot of the crunch out of it.

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

900rr is awsome bike. they are heavy, but that doesn't matter.

definately put a cage on it and over-fill a little with oil. i ran about 1/2 quart over, but you can go as much as 1 quart over and it still runs great.

the 96 had the new 919 motor that is solid as can be. take your time and get the carbs dialed in and it'll run fine. i recommend some dirtbike bar risers on that top clamp and some db bars. makes it easier to handle and it's cheap to replace when you bend them.

also, look into a larger sprocket. its not needed, but it helps a lot with the bike liter bikes. also makes it easier with slow stuff, you don't have to use the clutch as much for slowing them down, you can just rock the idle. 10-15 up in the back seems to be about the norm. you might be able to find a decent used one for a good price to test it out and see if you like it first.

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

Yeah I am pumped I have only seen one stunt show in person (physchofest in selisgrove PA approx 2 years ago) and I seem to remember ther being quite a few 900RR there. A plus is that it has a cage on it and a 12 bar. A bigger plus is that it also has Renthal fatbars (1 7/8 bars) on it already. It also has some ugly *** headlight I will pitch out. I am just glad I do not have to mess with the bars when I get it, and I definatley wanted something with MX bars. Any problems with the excess oil coming out of the crankcase vent? I am assuming the extra oil is to keep a good supply to the pick up while the bike is in a wheelie. I work as a motorcylce tech so I will definatley give it a good once over and make sure to sync the carbs. These where always one of my favorite streetbikes to work on because they where so easy to work on compared to other sportbikes of the same era. Thanks for the info and suggestions binder929rr

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

no problem.

about the oil, i've never had a problem with 900rr venting oil out the crankcase. even with 1 quart over. i would get some out of it from time to time, but more like residue than it actually "coming" out of it.

what kind of cage and bar does it have? chances are they are junk and you want to start fresh. a bad cage design is almost as bad as not having a cage.

and that 12 bar, if they built it from home, beware. a lot of guys build them shitty and not square, that will cause bad things to happen. and you want the bike to be just past 12 (if not more) when it's on the bar. that way it's stable when you scrape and you have clearance from the ground when you learn circles later.

Re: 1996 CBR 900RR decent first stunter?

I was told the crash cage is a 905 and the bar is an fi. Are these any good? I have seen some posts on here bashing Freestyle inginuity and I am interested to know if they are any good or not and why. We sell this brand at the shop I work at. Mainly because they are easily accesible. Tucker Rocky distributes them. If FI is really not that good I will not recommend there brand. We are mainly an offroad MX shop but we do sell some cages mainly to guys who want the added protection in a tip over not to serious stunters.
