It is difficult to say who does any trick first, since everybody is practicing separately and there isn’t a trick patent office. If Gary was doing his version a year ago then it sounds like he was the first one in the universe to get into that configuration. Aaron independently moved into that position from the Alex Flores trick, and as you say, Aaron is doing it with his foot on the peg. Aaron had been doing it for a number of months before he broke it out in his run at XDL. I kept asking him in previous comps whether he did it or not and his answer was always no, so I was personally pleased when he did it in the XDL championship run. It was that trick that people were referring to with various made up names at XDL because it was the first time it had been seen by most everybody. That was my main point. There could have been somebody in Tibet doing it 5 years ago. Who knows, but there is obviously a great deal of independent innovation going on and there is bound to be some duplication. My congratulations to Gary and Aaron and anybody else innovating tricks such as this.
Not being able to stunt myself I could not say whether cage is harder or easier. On the cage might you have full foot control for balance??? On the peg, you have very minimal foot control to maintain your balance forward and backward. I leave that argument to the guys doing the tricks to decide. I do not know which version is harder; I like both versions and the trick in general!
I will say this, that moments before Aaron was to do his runs at XDL, he high-sided a highchair circle and crushed is right foot between the cage post and tarmac. He said that it was the most intense pain he had ever felt. He was downing Advil like crazy trying to kill the pain so he could do his qualifier, but there was not enough time for it really to take effect for the qualifier and he was still in intense pain when he rode. He did complete the qualification run, just managing a 9th place finish, and keeping him in contention for the final. By the time the finals came, he was still in pain, but he was more able to deal with it. He could only just barely stand on his right heel throughout the entire final run. He still kept the “One-Footed Cochise as we call it, in his run though. He balanced as far back as he could manage on the heel of the foot he crushed, and was wincing in pain for every second he held the position…Just a little XDL backstory.
I think comments are wrong though about the crowd-pleasing aspect of this trick, because every time Aaron has done that trick, especially for the general public, they go wild, specifically for that trick. I believe it is because it just doesn’t seem possible to be balancing with so little contact with the bike and with the rider hanging out that far from the bike. I think that is why the one guy said photoshop. It happens to be one of my favorite tricks also for that reason, and I am definitely general public.

Re: Whos on the Come up.
It seems like the further your entire body is from the bike, the more the crowds get excited. There are a few triggers, feats of balance, danger = speed... and getting off and back on the bike, the crowds respond almost universally well.
