Advice needed - Building a 98 R1 Stunt bike...

Friend of mine is selling his 98 r1 for cheap. Cosmetically the bike is a wreck but mechanically is fine...

1) Is this a good bike to turn into a stuntbike?
2) What mods do you guys recommend? (apart from high bars...)

PS: Hello from South Africa!

Thanks...

I was thinking of making rearsets with the pegs lower and more forward... about an inch - to go with the high bars...

Have heard about ppl fitting bigger sprockets, is this neccesary?

bigger sprockets help w/ slower stuff, but most ppl will tell you to learn on stock first (i didnt, and i like the Engine Brake the big sprockets give.. it saved ma a$$ a few times)

you dont need DB bars on your R1 you can take your STOCK clipons off.. flip the LEFT clipon UPSIDE DOWN ,and use it on the RIGHT (same for the other side, and don't forget to put them almost straight so they sit like BD bars would) and you have the next best thing to DB bars, and for FREE... leave them a lil loose and when you crash they will just twist instead of brake/bend

as for the pegs i would leave them alone.. maybe cut 1" off the end of each peg so they clear the ground when the bike touches the cage/ground (that way you arent braking rearsets) and if you arent comfortable w/ the posisition of the rear brake it's adjustable...

hope this helps

Usually people stick to 600's for stunt bikes.

I had one, they're not an easy bike to stunt. Flip the clip-ons like they said and perhaps put something like a 53-56tooth on the rear. The subframes are part of the main frame so when **** goes wrong they bend very easy. Good luck!
