Unhappy What we all fear: dying on our bike

Just being back from the hospital, I feel I need to tell this incredible story of today, the short version. After going down to see Nags at Powersports, my friend finally got his new bike, 2003 R1 Black w/red flames. After riding, we were on our way to meet up w/another friend of ours.

On the way on a local neighborhood street, we are cruising around 30mph. As we are, I see pickup approaching out of her side street, but had to slam on her brakes, almost hitting me, as I swerve around, my friend is ahead, and did not even realize what just happened. I thought to myself "wtf", so we are approaching an upcoming stop sign. I flip my visor up, throw it in N, and getting ready to stop. At 5mph, the next thing I know, we are slammed into from behind, and we are both flying in the air. I landed on my side, and remember how much my leg really hurt. My friend is up, making sure I'm ok, as people come rushing towards us. I ended being taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, thank God everyone was ok, nothing broken, etc.

I would like to take the time and truly thank the following people: Darius (Icehot113) he ended up stopping by after hearing about what happened, and trailered mine and my friends bikes. I honestly do not know too many people who would do that, and thanks bro. Sean and Pat (Porkey) thanks for being there. My bad Porkey, you were talking to me as I was in the stretcher, and I was kind of our of it. Nags, thanks for today, and I appreciate you caring about how we were. I got yelled at for text messaging you back in the aumbalance!

Be careful out there guys, you just never know

Oh ya, the lady who hit us was under the influence of drugs, lab tests will reveal later. Worse, she had her little daughter w/her

Thank God, you only had minor injuries.

I understand what you are saying. I have not rode in a year and half before getting my TL. I crashed three times and am still paranoid about riding. Not to mention in the past four weeks since getting my bike I have nearly been hit four or five times. I was always like my friend, Tony. If I am going out, I want to do it doing what I love. He went out in 2000. I dont know if that is part of my problem, but I know I am riding safer than I ever have before.

Again, I am glad to here you are okay.

Glad to hear that your relatively ok man!

Could have been much worse. Bikes can be replaced or repaired. Alot of people on the road everyday that have no right being there.

Just my 2 cents....I've been steady riding streetbikes since 92 and I attribute never getting into a serious accident to one thing. I ride like everybody on the road is trying to kill me. I take nothing for granted, the car in front of you... left blinker is on? gotta be making a right, stop sign? they're not stopping, changing lanes? they never look. Granted I could very well die tomorrow through no fault of my own, but even then it would be my fault. PEOPLE DON'T PAY ATTENTION!!! Now in a 4000 lb SUV you can get away with that at times but on a 400 lb bike you will never win. Never ride with traffic, always look for a way out at all times, and NEVER EVER ASSUME PEOPLE SEE YOU! Trust me you will spend more of you life happier that way. I'm glad to hear you have another shot at enjoying riding, just be careful.

yeah, im thankful too, saturday i looped a stand up doin about 80mph. my bike is trashed. went like 20 ft in the air i was told. i got up and walked away with hardly a scratch.

that makes about 3 times now i could have seriously been injured or died and i got up with hardly anything.

about a month and a half ago we were rideing with a guy on a new RC51 right in the middle of town, doin maybe 30 mph, and he accidently bumped another guy we were rideing with and he paniced and grabbed a little too much front brake and endoed over the front of the bike and it landed on him. so when he hit the pavement i remind you he may have been doin 20-25 at the most, and it broke his pelvis in 5 spots, 3 vertibraes in his back, all his ribs on one side, elbow, and his colar bone. doctors said he probally wont walk again for about 6 months. and i get up from 3 wrecks doin a ton faster then that. very thankful. someone is watching out for me.

Thanks guys, yep I gotta see a lawyer at 1pm today

Hopefully get all new parts for the bike, maybe a paint job. My bike is nothing compared to Ryan's. I heard they said it was totaled on the scene 100.8 miles Nags. On a different note, the R1 wheelies like it's nothing

Again, let's all be careful guys. I don't think a 5 minutes has gone by since yesterday that I don't see how lucky we were.

Again, thanks to everyone and especially the south florida boys.

Glad to hear everyone is ok!!

I don't think there is one person that I've met that wouldn't do anything for one of their fellow riders, great group of people!

Yeah bro, glad your able to post about it.

I got in a bad wreck last November and broke my femur, dislocated my shoulder, and messed up my hand. The leg still hurts bad. But, I don't think I will ever learn. 2 Weeks out of surgery I was doing one legged standups, I just couldn't be without stunting. Kind of hard to stear right in a wheelie these days though.

well since we're on the topic, just this last thursday night (4.24.03) i was gettin on the expressway and as i was still in the merge lane, some broad hit me. I dont remember from about 5 mins. before the accident till they were loading me into the ambulance cause i was knocked out hard core. but i guess she tried to cut into the merge lane to pass us and clipped me with her right rear. my head hit the car and knocked me out cold, so i continued to fall off my bike and slide down the expressway unconsious (sp?) Thankfully i never get on my bike without my helmet, it's cracked and scrapped up, there's a large flat spot on the visior where my face would've been dragging on the pavement. My jacket and gloves were also destroyed. (Funny i could never think of a good reason to wear this stuff when it was warm out but i did anyways.) so some road rash here and there, a consussion, a night in the hospital, and a swollen knee that still needs an mri, and im up and walking with a limp. pretty sure the bikes totaled (hope it is). and to answer the question, if i die on my bike, everybody can be sure i died happy. peace

p.s. wear your ****ing helmets

Wow Glad to see your alive as well. I saw get a lawyer and sue like I am. Update: Her insurance is State Farm, so I should be seeing a good check for damages. I'm only gonna fix what has to be, I've decided this is my new stunt bike
