Here is just an idea for anyone looking for a helmet cam that does not cost more then your stunt bike

With a little help from Ebay and Radio Shack, I was able to put together this little set-up for just under $150 including the camcorder.

With a little help from Ebay and Radio Shack, I was able to put together this little set-up for just under $150 including the camcorder.

The camera can be found by doing a search on ebay for "bullet camera". This particular camera costs between 60-70 bucks, has a nice sharp picture, very lite and made of metal with a glass lens. 380 scan lines!!

The camera is powered by 12 volts and draws very little current, 8 AA batteries could definently run the thing all day without a problem. If you check out ebay, be sure to check that the camera you are looking at is color. Some of the auctions are a little misleading and its hard to tell if they are color or black and white.

Most riders have an old helmet laying around or don't mind using their current helmet. No mods will need to be completed for this, just goto Radio Shack and get some Superlock Fasteners. These are kind of like velcro on steroids. Put a nice size strip on your helmet and a nice sized strip on the camera. Push the camera onto the helmet, they will lock together. This makes a nice strong hold, the helmet can actually be picked up by the camera!! Though the initial hold is very strong, the camera can break away pretty easily should it be impacted by a fall!!
You will also need an 8 AA battery holder for the 12 volt supply and a connector which will fit your camera.

The last piece is the Camcorder, I got this one on ebay for 30 bucks. Its a Sharp Hi-8 viewcam. Plug the camera into the camcorder, start the camcorder recording, throw the camera in
a fanny pack around your waist and away you go. There is no sound with this, but all you would probably hear is wind anyway!!

Final cost:

Camera $70.00
Camcorder $30.00
Battery holder 2.00
Superlock Fasterners 2.00

Total $104.00

Of course camcorder prices will vary depending on what you are looking for, I happen to luck out and get two of these camcorders for 30 bucks each.

Sorry dude, I use the second one as a middle of the track cam
If it gets run over, oh well, just hope the tape makes it to get the footage from it! You can use any camcorder, I just use the Hi 8s since they are as close as you can get to the digital quality without spending a couple hundred bucks for it. It all depends on how picky you are about the quality of the video!!!

Here is an idea of what the video looks like from the cam. Please note that this is a video capture, so the picture is a little better then what this image portrays!!

Hey Fletch or whoever else could answer, me and a friend have been thinkin about buying a helmet cam but I heard the camcorder had to have a video input in order to use the helmet cam, which his $800 camera doesnt have. Is this true, and if so I guess that sharp has one, but I'm lookin on ebay and there is a few different models, would either of them work in your opinion?

The bullet cam I recieved had the wires, if you are looking at one on ebay, the one I baught was from intellicam, but there are others out there which are pretty much the same. Be sure its not Black and white. Some of them don't really tell you up front, I have found that if the camera is less then 60 bucks, they are black and white though there are some that are more. Make sure it says color in the ad. As for the camcorder, I only have one that does not allow me to input to the camera which is an older Mini-DV camera. There are normally 1 - 3 inputs on the camera for video and on every camcorder that I have ever used, the input and ouput connections are the same connector. The most common is called composite video, this is an RCA style jack and is what my bullet cam uses. There is also an S-VHS jack which more of the higher end camera also have aside of the composite. Then there is the IEE-1394 connection which is the digital connection for Mini-DV cameras. I have not run accross any external cameras that use this, but they might be out there, and if they are, they are probably pretty expensive. The only extra wire I needed was regular RCA to RCA cable since the one on the bulletcam was not long enough to fit around under my jacket into the fanny pack. Hope all of this helps.
