Long stand-up wheelies going up and down hills were my favorite. I just had fun seeing how long I could ride a wheelie for. Finding that sweet balance point when the wheel is just floating. For some reason it was never up there long enough, just a bit longer each time put a smile on my face. I practiced stoppies until I could roll them pretty far. The stoppies helped me know my exact braking limits on the track. I passed a guy breaking into a corner a couple of races ago and he came up to me and said my rear wheel was a foot off the ground, the best thing is I barely remembered the corner. I was comfortable braking at that level. Track days are alot of fun . I did mabye 15 track days before I raced. The problem is racing is addictive and very expensive. Once you reach a certain skill level and speed you need to spend money to be safe. Each race weekend cost's $800-$1000.00 at a club racer level.(crashing not included) I miss riding on the street, it's been about a year and a half. The nice thing about the track is it's safe, you have all your gear and you can just focus on riding without worrying about whats around the corner. Give it a shot if you have the money. You only live once. Racing definitly can humble you. No offense to anyone, but it's more difficult than stunting. You get fined for riding a wheelie, it's not to cool because everybody can do it. Unless you are top three mabye then it's cool after the race. Good Luck, Mark
*** that--racing more difficult than stunting? Maybe getting first place is more difficult. But who cares--I like stunting because there's no rank or, rules, or any of that bullshit--its more expressive than racing and much more challenging. Stunters push our bikes harder and we wreck a lot more than racers--that takes more ***** than anything. Sorry but the race thing just does'nt cut it for me. Stunter 4 life here.

eh... It is hard to compare the two. but I think to be a top notch racer is more difficult than being a top notch stunter. Stunting is way more artistic though. As far as pushing the bikes harder? I think that goes to racers. **** happens pretty fast at 200 mph.

Re: stunters turned racers or vice versa

I dont know about all that.. but other than my stunting buds, the only other cool cat is a local race shop owner (well maybe.. MAYBE a few others). He's just as die hard, everything goes into his riding, and the same is with our crew.

Stunters use E-Bay, Racers use E-Bay.
Stunters know welders, Racers know welders.
Stunters have gank bikes, Racers have gank bikes.

Race or Stunt, if you are at a top level, then you got skills and deep pockets. Sooner or later both are gonna break alot of ****!

I was a roadracer before, did a couple of season then I got into stunting and I never went on the track again (except for shows ), not even track day. it's way less expensive to stunt! i pickup my tires in dumpsters, the parking lot is free, I stunt when I want to, and I don't have to wake up at some crazy hours not to miss the riders meeting at 7 am

brings up and interesting point...

You can stunt everyday. You can not race everyday.

Re: stunters turned racers or vice versa

Your points are well taken. I'm seriously considering getting out of racing because of the money and restrictions. My race bike sits in my garage for at least 25 days a month.( the only nice thing, no cops after me and don't worry about getting hurt as much). I walk by it everyday and just wish I could go fu*k around do some wheelies and have some fun. Also, its tough to get right up to speed when you can only ride every couple of weeks. I really don't think going around a race track is more difficult than stunting. The skill level of all around motorcycle ability is higher in racing than stunting. There are a lot of guys cross training on dirt tracks and dirtbikes to get used to sliding the bike on the road. I appreciate the skill level when you have to train your brain not to panic or freak out when your brain is trained to freak out in that situation. Target fixation, tenseing up , not looking through are normal feelings you have to really think about.Real racing is always riding on the edge of control. Eventually a racer or serious track rider will reach a point when you can't go any faster, or so it seems. There is always a way to go a little faster and thats what drives racers. Stunting is a break from all of that because you can just ride and have fun. I remember the first real wheelie I rode for a ways and was in control. There was no better feeling in the world. A lot of people don't understand why people stunt. I support it and always will. I remember a couple of months before I quit riding the streets. One very special night on the way home from work I came to an empty stoplight. I popped it up real slow, shifted and keep it nice and slow. There were no lights, everything was dark and I was just going by feel, riding a mile long stand up in the dark, lighting some trees above. That feeling is the same feeling I get when doing good in a race. It was special and nobody can take it away. Stunters are like racers, always trying to do something a little better and sometimes crashing and getting hurt in the process. I'm no better than anybody on this forum, you learn from practice, other people mistakes and your own mistakes. Riding on a track will make anybody a better rider. There is a balance point racers search for . It's scraping your knee aroung a corner, the rear wheel is on an edge drifting in and out of traction, always searching for the sweet spot when your hooked up(mabye spinning it a little) Stunters should give the track a try and appreciate the streets. After all, that's where it all began. Cheers, Mark

Re: stunters turned racers or vice versa

To r1Alvin.
P.s. not to start **** but. Crashing more does not make you a better or more talented rider. There have been a lot of street (squid)riders with ***** that end up dead or in the e.r. There is a big difference getting flicked 10 feet in the air high siding at any speed than tipping over a twelve a clock wheelie going 10 m.p.h. I seen guys get paralized, bones broken and helicopters land on the track on more than one occasion. If you don't think racing takes ***** your a jackass. I'm not on this forum to say one thing is better than another. I think rolling a stoppie 1000 ft is insane. That takes crazy skills and natural talent, the same skills as going around a 120 mph corner scraping your knees with out even sticking them out. Don't talk about **** you don't know about. Mark

Re: stunters turned racers or vice versa

I like track days. It's fun to have your own pace and just take it easy with your knee down on every corner. Racing is pushing the limits a little too far for me. I don't think it's worth it to make one mistake and end up paralyzed so I think I'll stick to a more safe pace.

Re: stunters turned racers or vice versa

Mark Montgomery.....everything you have said is very he3lpful and i appreciate your input....im going to race

to everone else.....as you all know im a kneedragger that is my roots...when i got out of the wheel chair i turned towards stunting becuase honestly i thought it might be less physicaly demanding anbd with a blown back ...and a love for riding i thought i could possibly do it...pfft...good luck...i have mad respect to anyonbe that cann rock even slow ****......you guys truly have ***** anbd talent....i still love the stunt industry and for the most part the people i hav met int this sport have been vbery dedicated people and great at what the due...very humble people that only want to make the sport grow....kaneone, keeth(kaneone team), dsog thomas, darius, jason britton....etc... all people that are striving towards a goal that i have no doubt will be obtained......equally good at what they do...weather it be mic or bike......ill never be able to do that the few wrecks that i have had have floored me for weeks.....so i turn to racing...i respect both diciplines equally....both challenging in there own aspects.....one thing i will say about stunting is that it has a huge level of loyalty in each and every rider that can do it....from doodlef41 to darius..... you all do it for the love of the sport and i respect that to its fullest.......im GOING to club race next season and my bike is already torn down to be rady to be fit with the race harness....so i leave this sport with some regret that i cant ride anything like you guys but with the confidence that i can still jam on the track....ill be around for administrative purposes and post whoring... ....so thank you all for giving me your insight to this.
