Chain and sprockets question

Stupidest question ever probably, all I know is its a chain, needs oil and usually wants replacing every month

Someones breaking their race CBR600, he has some spare sprockets, 15 front and 50 rear, they are partly worn but only done 1 race meeting, should do the trick though for £20 inc. P&P.

But they are 520 pitch, he has a 520 chain (brand new) too for £35.

I have no idea what the difference is between the 525 and 520 pitches, is the 520 okay? better? worse? or what? I just want to change my gearing for as cheap as poss, only want some damn sprockets

Re: Chain and sprockets question

If the sprockets will fit your bike, then buy the sprockets and the chain. Don't just buy the sprockets as your chain won't fit them right, and will wear quicker.

520 is narrower. It will wear out quicker, but it reduces rotating mass of the bike.

Re: Chain and sprockets question

the 520 is smaller then the 525 most people think that means weaker but if its a nice 520 then its probally just as strong. and possibly a little lighter.

Re: Chain and sprockets question

okay cheers, so basically it'll fit on fine no worries..

"but it reduces rotating mass of the bike"

Is that good or bad? noticeable?

Thanks.

less mass = less weight = better power to weight ratio, i'm guessing?!!!

Re: Chain and sprockets question

droping down to a 520 is fine but make sure you get a good x ring chain, all race appicaltions list 520 even for the blades etc, you would have to go to a 520 if you want to go any bigger than a 50t rear you might find that you'll need to adjust the chain more often.
if you want a bigger rear sprocket (60t)i can get them made for £40 plus p&p

Re: Chain and sprockets question

I'm running a 520 with a 54t sprock, 2 split links and adjusted tight as Jordan's bra strap! never needed adjusting for 5 months its a cheapo ISIS one.

I once had a new DID xring 532 (or something massive like that) on a YZF 750 - 'kin thing snapped riding thru town 40mph - go figure!
