Registering your 50 for the road.....

I just registered my 50 for the road. I've seen it done, even asked about it at the DMV. She said is it under 50cc? Yes 49cc. OKAY. Well, got pulled over around 4PM and the cop let me go but said its LAW that you can't register them or ride them on the road (backroads, not highway) Can anyone SHOW me a LAW that says this? Can anyone confirm this? I don't care if someone doesn't agree with it because THEy THINK its unsafe, if its not LAW too bad.

If the DMV said you could drive it on the road, reffer the pigs to the DMV.

I did. He told me I was "lucky" he didn't give me a tickt and tow it. I was trying to be nice but my buddy had no problem telling him he'd see us in court if he did. Oh well. I found a statute that says a moped cannot be shifted, so I guess that means no 50's.

The lady at the DMV had to know what it was because she knew it was red AND she knew it had no lights because she told me to "ride it like your headlights" . I was like WTF? Half hour after sunrise and half before sunset.

its just like a moped, can be ridden on streets but not highways.

I dont know about you but i wouldnt ride a 50 with traffic lol

But here in CT anything under 50cc's HAS to be reg and insured. Too many people with little mopeds getting into accidents and walking away.

The law in VA is if you dont ride at night and if you have a license you should be good.

Went to the DMV. Its under 50cc. Got a plate that says Moped and slapped it on the front. I filled up yesterday for $1.09 and we called a cop thats our friend and he said he never heard anything against it but who knows.

Re: Registering your 50 for the road.....

I am from Ohio and was stopped by a statey once, but I was riding on a sidewalk. He told me that if I got plates for it from the DMV I would be ok as long as I didn't ride it at night, he also suggested getting some kind of break light, but that may have been for safety reasons. Basically the only reason he stopped me was because I was 3rd gear pinned in town on a sidewalk. Anyway he said with the plates and insurance they are fine.

Re: Registering your 50 for the road.....

in texas you need:

headlight, taillight, brakelight, mirrors, horn, blinkers, license plate with light, and insurance... oh, and the inspection sticker has to be visible...

we have rode a few times, out-ran cops 3 times, stopped once and the cop just told us to get it off the street...
we have rode city and country... we pick a starting point, ride 20, 30 miles out and then come back...
quite the fun

Re: Registering your 50 for the road.....

It seems like you said that it depends on the cop, but I don't know anyone who has gotten ticketed or anything, 2 guys I ride with had to push thiers like 1 mile home one time with a cop following them with the blinkers on, but that is the worst I have heard from Ohio thus far.

Re: Registering your 50 for the road.....

If you have the Certificate of Orign aka title.. thats why you can get busted and I guess now 06 the put that its not able to be registerd so the DMV doesn't mess up. There was a few quys from ma billerica who did it and got busted but they had the nads to do it.
