How long have you been running your 88kit? (or any BB)

I'm just curious here, a question for the masses. How long has your 88kit or any BBkit been running in your motor? This stems from a conversation I had last night with an old timer motorcycle buddy of mine. He's not into the 50's or anything like that but just a general all around motorcyclist. We were discussing my top end grenading and he started talkin about back in the day when they were doing bore up kits on single cylinder motors that the bore up kits were only good for X amount of hours. He said most of the kits you bought were good for about 50hours of use before you needed to rebuild it. So i was just kind of wondering how long you guys have been running your kits trouble free? I have never heard of any of the BB kits being only good to run for X hours before needing rebuilt but it did make me curious about life of an aftermarket BBkit. I was always under the impression that they were good to go once you put them on..

So post up. Vote in the poll and then tell us what kit you got, how long its been running strong, and any other info about it!

Re: How long have you been running your 88kit? (or any BB)

i've had mine in for about 2 months, i do a LOT of 1st gear slow wheelies for hours on end(90% of my total riding). I prolly have about 50-60 hours on it myself, again very HARD abuse. the only thing i noticed is that it's not as hard to kick start now as it was teh first month. that's why i was gonna call you.

one thing to maybe run by your gearhead buddy. Looks like you were runnning quite rich (from the piston pics) did you know that by being too rich the fuel can actually do what's called "washing the cylinder" and breakdown the oil film that the motor relies on in the cylinder, thus in turn suffer lubrication failure.

BTW i have a takegawa kit and NO OIL PUMP other than stock....but i too was told i'd be OK like that unless i was out seriously racing motos or something

Yea Glen, Z50 was just saying the same thing in my other thread about the top end. About gas possible leaking by and mixing with the oil causing the same problem. I will definately be looking into this.

I struggle with carb tuning I am the first to admit that. But I was pretty sure I had it right when I set it all up when I originally installed it. My plug checks were showing mostly grey in color. That was after I finally got the throttle response about right. This time around I will start over from scratch on setting up the carb after I install the new kit.

you must remeber metalurgy(sp)
has come along way from back in the day
a real race motor back then got torn down after every race rings and seals replaced each time nowadays with the technology you can almost ride a whole season with out worry of lunching the motor i have ridden mine now for 3 years and havent torn it down yet but i dont race it every weekend, also the way we race now isnt the same either, we raced 45 minute motos, not 10 laps, much much harder on motors back then than they are now, these motors even with a bbk should last you a lifetime. being rich will not wash your oil so bad that it will screw up the oil, if it was that rich you couldnt even ride it ,it would be so bad, leaving your gas on for a few days will, so remeber to turn off your gas each time you get off the bike my 9 y.o.'s bike has done this once already when he left the gas on and it was coughing and sputtering first thing i check when i get ready to fire it up is was the gas on when i got to it,i.e. did he leave it on, if it is first thing i do is pull the dipstick and smell the oil for fuel, most of the time it isnt but i have caught it one time.
dont get me wrong it doesnt happen everytime but if the intake valve is open when the engine gets shut off it will happen, so turn off your fuel when your done riding.if you do it everytime it will be like second nature to you and you wont have the problemo

Mine has been used hard since Texas. No problems yet. I just removed my tappet breather. Got sick of oil everywhere. Back to stock exhaust now too.

Some of the guys I ride with have had them in for a year plus. They are all running big name kits though, not TB like us.

Go to hell. :YEAH

I hate it oiling the whole rear of the bike. I need to come up with something else anyways. Keep that oil in the top end.

I am not riding much now. Bored.

Anyone wanna buy a 50? Built to the max?

attach a "catch can" so you can collect all that crap you are dumping down the back of your bike.

I am thinking of running a Takagawa 88 kit for my commuter duties. Anyone have experance with this kit?
