I got a 99 zx-9r and i had to put plastics and other brackets and **** on to ride. I know who had it before me and it ran fine when he put it away. Now i got everything done and it won't start. I replaced the plugs before i tried to start it and i put gas in it. I have the petcock turned on and it only starts if u spray starting fluid in it. When i do that it starts right up and sounds real good but then it don't have any gas to continue to run. I tried forever and came back later tonight and tried again but no luck. I also checked the plugs again to see if i ended up fouling them out but there fine. If anyone has a idea please post it up, i'm ready to ride.

Sorry for the long post but i figured i'd tell everything i'd done so u don't have to post if the plugs r good or whatever there might be.

Spark doesn't sound like a problem if it starts with starter fluid. Is the tank off or are you spaying it though the airbox?
If the tank and airbox is off try a small amount of gas down each carb and see if it starts for a short time like that.
If that works your just not getting gas for some reason.

 

When you turn the key do you hear the fuel pmp kick on?

 

Make sure your fuel lines arent clogged or something with bad gas man....Thats what it sounds like to me man!

 

yes my tank was on. I sprayed into the ram air vents with the tank on and it only would start with starting fluid. I took the fuel line off from the fuel pump to the carbs and let the line at the carb end hang down to see if gas came out while trying to start but nothing.

I believe it's the pump, i'm getting ready to go to the bike shop to get it tested tella the info later.

Well i went to the shop and they said my fuel pump is OK. They told me to check the relay. How do u check a relay? I called autozone and they said they can't test relays.

Oh and KCTony i don't hear the fuel pump when i turn it on by the way.

 

where does the tip switch mount? did you have it off when you were doing the plastics? that would be the next thing i would go for. if you're not hearing the fuel pump prime when you turn the key, thats the first issue you need to address.

as far as the relay goes, there is a relay on the 954 that mounts to the back of the headlight. it has 2 screws in it and you can mount it upsidedown, if you do, it cuts the fuel pump like the tip switch is stuck in the off position. so check if there is anything like that that you may have removed/replaced/moved when doing the plastics.

 

The ZX9 dosent have a tipover sensor.

 

Ok i just went to O'reilly's and i seen a fellow zx-9r owner and other rider and asked them what was wrong with my **** and the zx-9r guy that we call manboobs said ohhh well right when larry put the bike up i got mine and couldn't find out why it wouldn't run so i took the relay off of the "my now" zx-9 and put my **** relay on it. I sware **** can't go right for me at all it's one thing after another. I found the relay on ronayers.com and it cost $20 so it's on it's way.

Yeah my ZX7 doesnt have one either. Its cool to lay it down and let it run (kidding) haha!!
