Alright, for this game, lets assume you have your eye on a new bike. You can get it for $10,000 at your local dealer 20 miles away, or you can get it for $9,000 at another dealer 2 hours away.
Do you buy the local bike, or drive a couple hours and save $1000?

Re: Let's play What Would You Do!
Hypothetically speaking. I'm looking at getting a Road Star Warrior now and crossing over to the dark side, lol. Not too many dealers in Rhode Island, so I could either head towards Boston and pay a little more, or drive to western Mass and find one of those small town dealers who are more willing to deal.
I'm also debating trading in my TL1000 since I haven't gotten any calls on it thru CycleTrader.

It depends.....do you have a good realtionship with your local guy? Does he help you out? do they have a good service department? Are you treated with respect there? Do you plan to have your service work done there?
All of these are questions you should ask yourself. As a mechanic at a dealership, I see alot of guys going where they get the best deal, or so they think. However, as soon as a problem develops, (warranty usually) they come running to the closest place with good service. Sure, a warranty is valid at any dealer that carries your brand, and in a perfect world, the service department wouldn't care where you got the bike from. But the world is not perfect...people crash, birds sh*t on your freshly washed car, and shopping carts always seem to find your freshly painted ride in a deserted parking lot. The truth is, that if you buy a bike at a dealership, you are most likely going to be treated better than someone who bought elsewhere and shows up for service. I'm not saying that this practice is right, but it is common if not likely. Another thing to think about......if your local guy goes out of business, you just might be driving that two or more hours to the "other guy" for an oil filter and brake pads. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving money when it counts, but it helps to look at the big picture. One other thing I see with new bike buyers: A guy will see an out of state dealer advertising at exceptionally low prices. I see it all the time and it makes me laugh. A guy will tell me how he just saved a couple grand going to Ohio or wherever. The reason it was so much cheaper there was because the buyer doesn't pay sales tax until he registers the bike here......so instead of paying the extra two grand at a dealer here, he drives a few hours, pays for the bike, and then pays the tax here.......after tax and all, the buyer would have gotten the bike for the same overall price....minus the drive time and gas money. Just my
