powder coating rims? the only way?

is powder coating your rims the only way to paint them? was wondering if i could stripe off the existing paint and then spray some more on. by the way this doesnt have to be a 10 out of 10 paint job

Re: powder coating rims? the only way?

you could just spray over you fact wheel paint if you wanted to. If you are going to get them powder coated you are going to have to get them striped. Doesn't cost much to do it. IF you don't mind spending some money I would just powder coat them. **** will only cost you around 70 to 80 bucks. You could call daren at MACHINES OF MAYHEM cause they do it there. HE could tell you what it would cost and all that good stuff. Go to there web site to find out more about them. later

Powdercoating is pretty much paint that's baked on....Tougher, more resistant to chips and stuff....

But spraying them works Ok too.....just prep them well!!!

Re: powder coating rims? the only way?

Powdercoating is much better, easier to clean and doesn't scratch very easy. cost around $100 bucks if you take the rotors and bearings out. I prep mine paint them and put on like 5 coats of clear- looks like powder coating but scratch easy and wheel cleaner stains them...but cost like 10 bucks

Re: powder coating rims? the only way?

I have had car wheels powdercoated for $25 a wheel. More durable than automotive paint and MUCH more durable than spray cans.

I have also rattle canned many a bike wheel. Just clean them with soap and water. Harsh chemicals like wheel cleaner, brake cleaner, etc. will remove the finish. To do it right you are going to either paint over the existing paint using scotch brite pads, primer, paint, lots of clear or strip the wheel of paint, primer, paint, and clear - either way the cost is near what powdercoating is. You might as well powdercoat it, but if it's late at night and you just want to do it, ****ing spray it :D

Re: powder coating rims? the only way?

i painted the rims on my 1k with some automotive paint. the best thing about that is the clear coat. you can do so many different paint schemes. i had the spokes painted red and the outside of the rim painted black it looked awesome. $35

If you are going to use spraypaint on your wheels expect to have to touch them up every time you get a new set of tyres fitted because they will chip and look *****.
