Original owner lost title on bike (Question)

Alrighty, I'm looking into buying a 900rr for stunta and street purposes BUT the bike has gone through 2 owners and never registered, the original owner is long gone so I was wondering how would I go about getting it titled?

First of all don't buy it.

You are setting yourself up for disaster. If you buy it and the bike turns out to be stolen then you will lose the bike and the money. The person that sold it to you won't want to fess up and trun the money back to you and bye bye goes the cash. Next, you must ask why. Why did they not register it in his name or the other guy? It seems to fishy. If it was a money issue then they could have just put gift or a very low price that way the taxes would have been VERY cheap. I am NOT syaing to do that as it is very illegal. I am saying they COULD have done that if it was an issue. Next why didn't the last guy do it? He must know something is very wrong and that is why you are probably getting such a good deal on it.

Why don't you ask who's name is on the title and go look him up on 411 or in the phone book or simply avoid the hastle and go with something legit.

Someone knows somethig and they aren't telling you. By law they are not obligated to sell the bike unless they are the registered owner. For 1 good reason. If I stole someone's car and found their title in the glove box. I would be selling a stolen car and could say what they are saying to you" I never registered it" and even worse in your case "I never registered it nor did the guy before me and none of us know where the original owner is. That means that any parking tickets, wreckless driving, if he ever left the scene of a crime and someone took down his license plate he will get harrased.
I say stay away. Something doesn't seem right. I am about to buy a bike and about 1wk from me talking to this guy and sealing the deal and me sending my money to Indiana to this guy out there he said he never registered it in his name b/c the he ran out of money after replacing the plastics and a few other parts. UHHHH. Why didn't you register it first then fix'er up? I left that deal.

About what kunslip600 said. You can never register it without a title or bill of sale. If I stole your car and went to the DMV, could I register it?

Yeah man... I bought a gixxer from Conneticut once. Big mistake. I get all the way up there and the kid tells me he can't "find" the title. He "misplaced" it. So here I am looking at a 97 w/ no title. He swears it's clean and will find it ASAP. I live in Ma and wasn't making another trip. He was asking $5000 for it. I handed him $3000 and told him that I was taking the bike and when he got the title and sent it to me, I'd pay $1500 to him (so I offered $4500). He said ok. I get back the next day with the bike. The kid calls me the next day. "I found the title, I'm sending it to ya today, overnight mail". I get the f*ckin' title and it says REBUILT in big bold letters. It sucked cuz it put me through hell trying to re-title it in Ma. You need to get it registry inspected, not a quicky by a dealership or shop. It needs to be completely gone through before a rebuilt or salvaged title can be issued. It took me weeks to get an appointment to do so, and it did pass. However, I never sent the rest of the money to the kid. F*$K HIM!!! If he were honest, I still woulda bought it (offered him less no doubt). The fact he hid it from me and told me it was a "clean bike with a clean title" is what did it. It was hard for me to sell it too a year later cuz of the title. And I had put tons of $$$ into it... Carefull what you buy. Here in Ma, it's $25 to do a title search (finds current owner on paper), and $50 for a duplicate title. Dish out the money to do that first, and if it's clean and no problems take it off the asking price

the best thing to do would be to go to the tax/tag/title office and tell them you want to apply for a lost title ( it is a process) but you get your title and it's all legit
