F4 Runs smoother without exhaust?

I own a 1999 Honda F4 and recently screwed up my exhaust messin around... long story... or maybe short... it coasted along side a fire hydrant and I wasnt on it. Anyway it pinched off the pipe between the glass pack and the header. While installing the new exhaust pipe I figured i would start it up out of curiosity and see what it sounded like, rode like etc. Despite hurting my ears the bike runs just as smooth as a brand new BMW. Not a a single miss fire the whole time it was running as opposed to when I put the exhaust on and Ill hear the occasional miss fire while idling.

Anyone know why this is? Ive heard the a bike will most always run worse with just open headers. Could the previous owner tuned the carbs for this? I dont know. Any help would be great.

Thanks much!
