turning a dirtbike into a streetlegal supermotard?

I've been looking around the internet doing some research on supermotards. All the new motards I find that are setup and ready to go for street use (KTM,Husaberg, etc.) are all f******* expensive!....and I don't think I'll have any luck finding one used here in good ol' Alabama or the Southeast for that matter. Most people wouldn't even know what they are.

I did find a smoking deal on a used KTM 625.... For those not familar with these bikes...they are kinda a cross but still aren't street legal in present form. Kinda strange considering there is a mudflap installed on them from the factory like on a sportbike ..... They come with a battery, headlight and brakelight but no turnsignals or mirrors and still have knobby off-road only tires on them. A guy at the local KTM dealship said he had heard of people running them on the street and having them licensed but no one locally he knew of......which comes to my main question.......

How the hell do you go about getting a bike like this licensed for street use? I am guessing you make an appointment at the DMV and they check it out for DOT tires, turn signal, mirrors, maybe an emissions test and noise test??? Is there any other hiccups or special payments you have to make since it was originally an off-road vehicle? Is liability insurance even possible? I'm kinda lost in whether or not to buy the 625 in fear of spending alot of money on the bike/wheels/and tires and it being rejected when I try to have it registered.

Anyone got any experience in making a dirtbike street legal?

Here's my 2cents. Depending on the laws in your state regaring inspections, you will at least have to have signals, horn, headlight, brake light, mirror, etc. As far as emissions, and noise, that varies. The biggest problem you'll have is getting a DOT title. The only way I've heard of that working is getting a mechanic to lean the bike for you. It will be issued a title that I'm pretty sure can be registered. I'm not 100% on this but I'm into supermotards myself and this is the info I got. Good luck.

Appreciate the info. One question... what exactly do you mean by having a mechanic to lean the bike?

Thanks
