Here is the situation. Last year I bought a 929 off of ebay for $900 bucks (it was half parted out). The seller claimed that he had lost his copy of the title and he could get a new one generated if the buyer wanted it. I checked on the bike and found out that it had a clear title, no liens and was in this guys name. I bought the bike because I knew that if it went south i could easily make my money back parting out the rest of the bike. Anyway, I spent the winter fixing up the bike and got it streetable. The guy kept stringing me along saying that he was getting the title blah blah blah. His main defense was that he didn't live in California anymore so he had to do everything by mail. Anyway, I made another call to the California DMV and they said that he owes registration on the the bike and until that is paid they won't let him get a new title. I was just wondering if I had any other options besides parting the bike out or getting a new frame? I have a witnessed bill of sale available. I think i already know the answer to this question but I thought I would throw it out there.

as a side note, I actually picked up the bike at the guys house so I have met him and know where he lives (its about 5 hours)

 

You'll have to get the bike bonded. You'll have to jump through some hoops, but it can be done.

 

How much does he owe for reg fees? Cant you just pay it if its a small amount?

Bonding basically states that anything that's happened to the bike before you IS not your fault and/or problem basically. For example, if it's a theft recovery and you need to get a new title the bike has to be bonded to you so that anything that has happened to it is not your problem.

You'll have to go to your local DMV and tell them your situation, they might be able to help you out without getting the bike bonded but more than likely you'll need to bond it. They'll give you a packet stating what you need to get done, and you'll have to take your bike down to the state patrol and get a VIN Inspection done. Make sure the bike is street legal (signals, mirrors, license plate holder, etc) so when you go for the inspection they won't hassle you. Since you have a bill of sale (you might have to get it notarized) this proves you bought the bike legit. The bond value is usually 10% of the value of the bike, but it may be different.

Like I said, tons of hoops but you can get it done. Try seeing if you can get the registration fees paid for b/c it may be cheaper to go that way.

 

If the bike is currently registered to the guy you have a Bill of Sell from, you should have absolutely no problem with this.

Go into the DMV and get the form that requests a transfer of registered owner and duplicate title. Give them the BoS and pay the registration fees and you should be done.

 

The only issue I would have is that I am not a California resident which might make it much more difficult...

 

If registration fees are owed they are not your problem, period. Title bond is a waste of time and money in your case. Pay the registration fee's and get the title. Or sue the guy for it, which will take forever and you may never see the money anyway. Title Bond + Hassle + time wasted = not worth it.

 

It's hard to pay reg. fees when you don't live in the same state.

 

you bought the bike from another state, registration fees are not your problem. those are for being registered to him. go to your DMV and get it transfered into your name. your going to have to pay fees anyways because you have to get it transfered within 30 days of purchase. so your going to have a fee to pay anyways. just go up there and do it
